Carter Jr. Pendergast

Carter Pendergast, Jr., 88, Bismarck, died June 26, 2013, at Sanford Health. A memorial service will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Cremation has taken place. The family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service on Friday for coffee and refreshments. Carter was born on December 20, 1924, at Northwood, ND, the son of Carter and Ovedia Sime Pendergast. He attended schools in Northwood and Grand Forks. He entered military service in 1943 and served in France and Germany with the 787th Tank Battalion. After the war, he enrolled in the University of North Dakota School of Commerce, earning a bachelor's degree in accounting. In June 1949, Carter was united in marriage to Beverly Wick of Grand Forks. They moved to Bismarck where he was associated for several years with his father, in the operation of the Western Grain Company; a line of country grain elevators in southwest North Dakota. He was also employed by the North Dakota Workman's Compensation Bureau as chief auditor, after which he joined the staff of Quain and Ramstad Clinic as a senior administrator, retiring in 1988. Carter was a long time member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, where he ushered, taught Sunday school, and served as a member of the church council. He was a lifetime member of Bismarck Elks, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Phi Delta Theta social fraternity, and AMVETS. Carter was very proud to have gone to Washington, DC, for the Roughrider Honor Flight on September 10 and 11 of 2010. He served at various times as fiscal officer of Bismarck Drug Abuse Foundation, and was treasurer of Bismarck Medical Foundation and Fairview Cemetery Association. He was an avid golfer, a fair card-player, and a lover of the outdoors. Carter is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, John and Tana Pendergast of Bismarck; his daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly Joanne and Gary Smith of Bismarck, and Karen and Bob Gasperino of Las Vegas, NV; four grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-granddaughters; and three great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beverly; his son, Carter III; and his brothers, James and Thomas. Memorials may be made to Sanford Foundation or a charity of the donor's choice.
