Charles "Chuck" Olson

Charles “Chuck” E. Olson, 80, Bismarck, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11:00 am Monday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Nadine Lehr officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon until 5:00 pm Saturday and from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Chuck was born May 5, 1929, in Rugby, ND, the son of Charlie S. and Ruth Borns Olson. He was raised on the family farm, lived briefly in Montana, and returned to Towner, ND. Most of his childhood was spent in Towner where he attended school at Copper Dahl and Towner. He worked on various farms as a young adult. Chuck entered the US Army on June 20, 1951. He proudly served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 19, 1953. Upon return from the service, he worked on the oil pipelines. In 1955, he starting driving truck for Northern Tank Line, a petroleum products transport carrier in Tioga. On February 29, 1956, Chuck married Shirley Zeretzke of Upham in Minot, ND. They had two children, Roxane and Dean. Following their marriage, they lived in Tioga, ND, and Plentywood, MT. In 1958, they moved to Ray, ND. In 1971, the family moved to Bismarck, ND. Chuck worked for Northern Tank Line from 1955 to 1991 over 36 years. Later he worked for Dixon Brothers, retiring in 1994. Chuck enjoyed fishing, hunting, dancing, listening to the country music radio stations, playing bingo at the VFW, and spending time with family and friends. Chuck was a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church, the American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Amvets. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley; his daughter and son-in-law, Roxane and Patrick O’Neill, Moreno Valley, CA; his sisters, Leah Ray Waltzer, Minot, ND, LaVerne Bruce Knapp, Minot, ND, and Viola Schell, Minot, ND; his brother, Vernon Olson, Minot, ND; his brother-in-law, Marnel “Bud” Getzlaff; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Dean Charles Olson in 1977; his parents, Charlie and Ruth Olson; his sister, Doris Getzlaff; his sister-in-law, Teresa Olson; his brother-in-law, Tony Schell; and his nephew, Tim Schell.
