Emma Landenberger

Emma Landenberger, 95, died August 25, 2005 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at English Lutheran Church, Tuttle, with the Rev. Valerie Kinlan officiating. Burial will be in the Tuttle Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 5:00 PM. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Emma Nagel was born October 8, 1909 the daughter of Fred, Jr. and Sophie Fehr Nagel at the Nagel homestead 10 miles southwest of Tuttle, ND and went to school through eighth grade in Chestina Township. On November 15, 1927, she married Philip Landenberger at Zion Langedahl Lutheran Church near their farmstead. They lived on the farm where Emma lived as a young girl. They had four children, one son, Leonard Doris Merkel Landenberger, Tuttle, ND; three daughters, Esther Fred Anderson, Moorhead, MN, Lyla Donald Vertein Bloomington, MN, Iris Gerald Simon, Ellsworth, ME; nine grandchildren, Terry, Lane, and Brian, Landenberger and adopted son, Bob, Keith, Linda, Jo Anne, and James Anderson, and James Vertein; nine great-grandchildren, Lisa, Sarah, and Alexis Landenberger, Jessie and Jared, Anderson Robert Kappel, Matthew Dahl, Connor Anderson, and Michael Vertein; and four great-great-grandchildren, James, Owen, Abram, and Tanner. Emma and Philip farmed on the family farm until 1951 when son Leonard took over the farm and they moved to Tuttle. Philip continued to farm for many years. In the later years they moved into Tuttle Housing Apartments. Emma's husband of 65 years passed away on February 14, 1993. Emma lived in Tuttle until she moved to The Waterford, in Bismarck, and lived there for 2 1/2 years, then moved to The Terrace for 2 1/2 years. Emma worked with Philip in the field and milked cows all the time they lived on the farm. She baked many wedding cakes. There weren't many people in the surrounding area that didn't have a wedding cake or an anniversary caked baked by Emma. Emma had many hobbies, she was an excellent cook and did lots of fancy needle work and was known for her beautiful quilts. Each of her children and grandchildren were given a quilt. She also won a number of prizes with her quilts. Emma was active in Ladies Aid at English Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Martha Circle. She was also a member of Cheerful Homemakers. She was a very good bowler and had trophies and ribbons to prove it. Emma had lots of friends and was the best mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother anyone could have. She enjoyed and loved her family a great deal. She enjoyed her visits with people and talking about old times. If you needed to know something of the past, names and stories all you had to do is ask Emma, her mind was very sharp all her life. Emma and Philip had deep faith in God and were baptized, confirmed and life long members of Zion Langedahl and English Lutheran Churches. Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Philip; her parents; her infant son, Philip Jr.; one brother, George; two sisters, Alvina and Clara; and six step-sisters, Katy, Christina, Lena, Lydia, Emma, and Martha.
