Florence Skaar

Florence H. Skaar, 91, Bismarck, died April 13, 2007, at Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck, with Pastor Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Bismarck. Visitation will be Wednesday from 12:00 - 9:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, and will continue Thursday one hour prior to the service at the church. Florence was born on January 19, 1916, in Arnegard, North Dakota, the daughter of Leonard and Sena Hetland. She was the second child in a family of six children. She lived in Arnegard until she was eleven years old. At that time, she moved with her family to Watford City, North Dakota, where she attended and graduated from Watford City High School. After graduation, she was employed at the McKenzie County Welfare Office. Florence met Nels Skaar in Watford City and they were married on June 8, 1936. They moved to Bismarck later that month. Florence raised five children and spent the early years of her life being a homemaker. She sewed many of the clothes worn by her children, made several afghans for her children and grandchildren, made baby sweaters for Lutheran World Relief, and enjoyed needlepoint. She also was an excellent cook and baker. When her husband started his own consulting engineering business, Florence was his stenographer and bookkeeper. Trinity Lutheran Church was a very important part of Florence's life for over 60 years. She was involved with the Circle, Tuesday Morning Quilters, and Bible Study. She also enjoyed her neighborhood Birthday Club. Florence and Nels spent many winters in Mesa, Arizona, after their retirement. They loved the game of shuffleboard, played in many tournaments, and won many trophies. When their grandchildren in Bismarck became involved with school and church activities, they decided to sell their home in Mesa and enjoy those events. Nels died on October 9, 1993. She is survived by her daughter, Jan Heins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and her children, Angie Robert, Paul Heins, and Scott Lorrie Heins, all of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; her daughter, Flo Dennis Schulz of Bismarck, North Dakota, and their children, Jeff Heather Schulz of Austin, Texas, and Brad Schulz of Phoenix, Arizona; her son, Don Sandy Skaar of Albuquerque, New Mexico; her brothers, Leonard Vera Hetland of Bismarck and Andy Hetland of Laughlin, Nevada; and her great-grandchild, Julia Heins of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Nels; her brother, James; her sisters, Sylvia and LaVonne; her daughter, Linda; and her son, Dean. Florence's family truly appreciates the wonderful care she received at Medcenter One Care Center. The family prefers memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck.
