George Grensteiner

George Grensteiner, 79, died May 30, 2009, in Bismarck. Services will be held at 9:30 am on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Church of the Ascension, with Rev. Marvin Klemmer officiating. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, with a vigil service at 7:00 pm. George Grensteiner was born in Selfridge, N.D. on May 16, 1930, to Elizabeth and Philip Grensteiner. The family moved to the Strasburg area and then onto Braddock in 1939. George was drafted into the Army November 19, 1952 and was honorably discharged on April 23, 1953. As a young man he worked for Bob Schlosser and Dale Rambough in farming. In 1962, he bought the Braddock Bar. In 1965, he married Lorraine Barbot at St. Katherine’s Church in Braddock. They owned the bar until 1988. Together, they also owned and operated George’s U Save Store from 1980 until 1983. George moved to Bismarck in 1988 where he worked at the VFW Club and also for Harlow’s Bus Service until 1991. He then drove senior citizens for the Burleigh County Senior Adult Program for four years. He moved onto driving transit for three years and drove for the school system with Harlow’s for another three years where he then retired due to illness. George was a member of the VFW, Elks “Honorary Life Member”, Eagles, Knights of Columbus “Honorary Life Member”, and the Moose. George missed his life in Braddock and at times found it difficult to adjust to the city life. He had a great love of people and being his own boss. He enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, and watching Minnesota Twins baseball. He loved playing cards with Vern and Mary Leblanc and Jim and Rosella Splonskowski. He also loved his children and grandchildren. They frequently babysat Isaac and enjoyed sharing suckers. He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; one daughter and son-in-law, Alyce and Rich Wiemken, Fargo, N.D.; five sons, Gerry Ramey Grensteiner, Kurt Grensteiner, Allen Christy Grensteiner all of Fargo, N.D., Michael Grensteiner Amanda Schoenborn, and Loren Grensteiner Jennifer Bohn both of Bismarck, N.D.; fifteen grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Andy Grensteiner, Braddock, N.D., and Henry Bernice Grensteiner, Bismarck, N.D.; and two sisters, Theresa Leonard Leier and JoAnne Tony Glatt both of Napoleon, N.D.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alice Grensteiner; and one sister-in-law, Mary Grensteiner.
