Karen Haskins

Karen Haskins, 69, Bismarck, was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2011 and after a courageous battle went home peacefully to her heavenly Father on March 29, 2012. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, April 3, at Church of Corpus Christi in Bismarck with Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at the Sherwood Union Cemetery, Sherwood, ND. Visitation will be Monday, April 2, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Karen Elaine Engh was born on February 19, 1943, in Sherwood, ND, to Adolf and Thora Engh. Karen was raised in Sherwood and graduated from Sherwood High School. She was united in marriage to Art Haskins at St. Leo's Church in Minot where they raised their three children, Art, Mark, and Holly. During her relationship with Art, Karen met Father McKenna and decided to convert to Catholicism. Karen was very proud of her faith and sent all of her children to Catholic high schools. Karen served as the president of St. Mary's Pride. While in Minot Karen worked at Trinity Hospital and was active in the Little Flower Church community and other local organizations. The Haskins opened and managed the Homesteaders Restaurant until 1986 when they moved to Bismarck. In Bismarck, Karen worked at a dental office, the University of Mary, and managed the Golden Link program at Medcenter One. From 1990 to 1992 Karen and Art lived in Wilmar, MN, where Karen worked for Beverly Enterprises. In 1992 they returned to Bismarck were she started working for the North Dakota Health Care Association and continued her education and received her master's degree in management. As the vice-president for the agency, Karen had the privilege of working with North Dakota Senators Conrad and Dorgan and Representative Pomeroy on federal health care issues. She was proud of the recognition that she received from them for her work on reimbursement issues. Karen retired in 2005. Karen was always active in the church and had served as a Eucharistic minister. Karen was very proud of her Norwegian heritage and even modeled her bunard at the Hostefest. She was at proud member of the Sons of Norway. Karen also enjoyed watching the Twins with her mother-in-law, Hazel. She is survived by her husband, Art Haskins; her children, Art Kathy Haskins, Mark Haskins, and Holly Scott Dietrich; her grandchildren, Kori, Patrick, and Jonathan Haskins, Tara and Kylee Welch, Sarah Gabriel, and Christopher Dietrich; her great-granddaughter, Gracelynn Haskins; and her brothers and sisters, Earl Engh, Robert Betty Engh, Amy Johnson, and Thelma Bill Gates She was preceded in death by parents, Adolph and Thora Engh; her brother, Arnold Engh; and her sister, Nora Gahn. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to The Bismarck Area Catholic Education Foundation or the Salvation Army.
