Les Ellingson

Leslie "Les" Verlin Ellingson, 89, Bismarck, died June 4, 2011, at his home. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 12:30 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Chaplain Dan Sweeney officiating. Burial will be held at the ND Veteran's Cemetery at 3:00 PM. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Les was born on September 1, 1921, on his grandparent's Jens and Fredricka Nelson homestead in South Viking Township, Benson County, to Jesse and Ida Nelson Ellingson. He attended grade school in the Hellerud School in West Antelope Township. He was baptized and confirmed at the South Viking Lutheran Church and attended Benson County Agriculture Training School, graduating in 1940. Les entered the Army and served in the Philippines during 1945 - 1946. After returning home, he obtained his pilot's license and operated a trucking business until 1950. He married Dallas Halvorson on February 24, 1949, at Maddock, ND. He started farming on the family farm south of Maddock in 1950 and continued to farm after moving to Oberon in 1954. Les and Dallas moved to Bismarck in 2008. He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and served on the Calvary Church Council. He also served as secretary and treasurer of the Oberon Fire Department and on the Oberon City Council. Les was a member of VFW, Eddy County Post Sheyenne, Gerald A. Haskin Post 122, and served as adjutant and treasurer. He enjoyed photography, listening to music, playing guitar, hunting, and fishing. He was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed old cars. During the winter months, Les worked at Hilding Carlson Service Garage and Matt Geston and John Olson's John Deere Dealership in Oberon and Maddock. Les was a very social man and he could strike up a conversation with anyone. Les is survived by his wife, Dallas of Bismarck; his son, Terry Becky of Devils Lake, ND; his daughters, Gail Ellingson, Tami Don Kubischta of Dickinson, Lana Garry Houim of Mandan, and Vickie Doug Anderson of Rapid City, SD; ten grandchildren, Gary, Bill Maiko, Marnie, Patrick Sung Hee, Eric, Erika, Emily, Mitchell, Jessica, and Juanita; five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Nathaniel, Mina, Jena, and Hana; one brother, Frances of Minot; and one sister, Kathleen of California. He was preceded in death his parents; his brother, Don; and his sisters, June and Phyllis.
