Lorraine Ostroot

Lorraine Ostroot, 93, Bismarck, passed away on March 24, 2010, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Services will be held on Monday at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck with Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 – 8:00 pm at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church. Lorraine and Lorna twins were born on May 10, 1916, in Astoria, SD, to Theodore and Hannah Quail Ostroot. In 1924, the family moved to Crosby, ND, and later to Minot where Lorraine graduated from high school. She then attended business college in Minot and worked for the Ward County Agricultural Association. In 1941, she moved to Washington D.C. where she worked for 34 years as secretary at several agencies, including Crop Insurance and Marketing Administration, Foreign Agricultural Services, and Office of Secretary of Agriculture. Her jobs took her on several trips abroad. The first was in 1955 to Rome, Italy, with the Food and Agriculture Organization. In 1960, Lorraine went to work in Geneva, Switzerland, for General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. She was there for six months. In 1968, she went to Tokyo, Japan, to work as Trade Fair Assistant on an agriculture trade show. She was there for three months. In 1971, Lorraine received a “Superior Service Award” for outstanding service as private secretary to the Assistant Secretary of Agriculture for Economics. While in Washington D.C., she was active in Lutheran Place Memorial Church. She was on the church council and was head of the altar committee. She also belonged to the church circle. She retired from the Department of Agriculture in 1975 and moved to Bismarck to be with her sisters. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck where she belonged to the church circle and was on the church Library and Altar Committees. Lorraine and her sister, Lorna, were members of Sons of Norway and historians of the Lodge and helped with Meals on Wheels. Lorraine and Lorna enjoyed traveling to Alaska and Norway together. Lorraine is survived by her twin sister, Lorna Tyson of Bismarck; her sisters, Charlotte Hutchens of Dayton, WA, Rhoda Pederson of Bismarck, and Helen Hammer of Bismarck; her sister-in-law, Dolores Ostroot of Brookings, SD; three nephews; two nieces; one grand-nephew and grandniece; and many cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Kenneth Ostroot; and her brothers-in-law, Lee Hammer, George Tyson, Lloyd Hutchens, and Melvin Pederson. The family requests memorials to Trinity Lutheran Church or donor’s choice.
