Paul Springan

Paul Springan, 89, Bismarck, died April 5, 2010, at Medcenter One Hospital, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Jeff Tengesdal and Rev. Robert Lynne officiating. Burial will be held in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Paul was born April 5, 1921, at Stanley, ND, the son of Henry and Christine Jensen Springan. He graduated from Stanley High School, home of the Blue Jay’s basketball team that Paul played on, proudly playing in the State Championship game. Paul fondly referred to Stanley as “center of the universe.” He attended North Dakota State University before entering the Army Air Corp. during WWII. Paul married Mae Keller on August 26, 1945, in Northwood, ND. He completed his optometry degree at the university in Chicago. He started his optometry career in Chinook, MT, before joining his brother, Arnie, in practice in 1951, at Bismarck, ND. Paul retired in 1997 and as was his nature, did not let anyone know, since he wanted no fuss made. He was an active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and was a member of the Bismarck Lions Club. Paul was an avid golfer who had the satisfaction of a hole-in-one at Madden’s Resort in Brainerd, MN. Paul was a true gentleman and a man of character and integrity. He was a real people person, who in a quick moment would let others know they were important. He was a loving grandfather a great father, and to Mae; her dear pappy. He will be forever loved and remembered. He is survived by his wife, Mae, Bismarck; his daughters and sons-in-law, Pam Jim Sola, Boise, ID, Marcia Steve Herman, Bismarck; and Paula Glenn Wager, Longmont, CO; his grandchildren, Chad Herman, Jeremy Dayjah Herman, Scott Kimberly Herman, Kory Orheim, Kris Orheim, Adam Wager, and Brooke Wager; one great-grandson, Cameron Herman; and his sisters, Edna Frostad, Auburn, WA, and Anna Marie Bill Whitmore, Stanley, ND. He was preceded in death by an infant son; his brothers, Rolf and Arnie; and his sister, Margaret. Memorials may be given to the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck.
