Robert "Bob" Schneider

Robert "Bob" Schneider, 88, was welcomed into heaven on Saturday, September 29, 2007, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Mass of the Christian burial will be held at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, October 2, 2007, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit Church in Bismarck with the Reverend Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military honors provided by VFW Post #1326. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3 - 8 PM at Parkway Funeral Service where a rosary service will held at 6 PM. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church. Robert James was born near Hay Center, NE, on December 24, 1918, the son of John F. and Anna Broz Schneider. He was raised and grew up in McCook, NE. Following high school, Bob attended and graduated from McCook Junior College. He attended the University of Wyoming until the start of World War II, when he enlisted in the army. On May 2, 1942, he married Margaret Osborne at Ft. Leonardwood, MO. Bob served with the 85th Quartermaster Corps in England, Africa, and Italy. Following his service in WWII, the couple made their home in McCook and Falls City, NE, before moving to Valley City in 1952 where they worked and raised their family. They later moved to Bismarck in 2005. Bob and Margaret shared 65 years together until her passing earlier this year. Bob worked for 33 years with the US Postal Service in Valley City, retiring in 1983 as the Assistant Postmaster. He was active in his community and served as president of the Valley City Eagles Club. He was a long-time member of NARFE, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees; he served as the Chairman for the District 24 Democratic NPL; and was a candidate for the ND Legislature in 1984. Following retirement Bob and Peg traveled extensively. They loved to entertain, and their home was always open to friends, children and grandchildren. Bob was a long-time member of St. Catherine's Church in Valley City; an active member of the Knights of Columbus; and a member of St. Catherine's Parish Council. For many years, Bob and his family helped coordinate the annual Christmas Eve Banquet for the homeless and others alone during this special season. His kindness, gentleness, and wonderful sense of humor will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Grateful for having shared in his life are his children, Roberta Luke Lorenz of Erie, CO, Jane Terry Mammel of Oconomowoc, WI, John Jane of Chandler, AZ, Michael Kathy of Bismarck, Mary Stan Marthaller of Bismarck, and Patrick Diane of Flagstaff, AZ; fourteen grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Keith Patricia Osborne of Littleton, CO; and one sister-in-law, Kathleen Harley Fox, Ogallala, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; and nineteen brothers and sisters. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Bismarck Hospice or the Riverside Harvest.
