Steven Becker

Steven Mitchell Becker, 49, Bismarck, died January 2, 2004, after a short battle with cancer, at a Bismarck hospital. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 3:00 PM at Church of St. Anne, 1315 Braman Avenue in Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be at Saints Peter and Paul Cemetery in rural McHenry, North Dakota. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 PM - 9 PM and Monday from 9 AM - 5 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. A vigil service will be held on Monday at 7:00 PM at Church of St. Anne. Steven was born on November 29, 1954, in New Rockford, North Dakota, the son of Eugene and Virginia Breckheimer Becker. He was raised on a farm near McHenry. He attended school in McHenry, graduating from McHenry High School in 1973. Steve graduated from NDSU in 1977 with a degree in Horticulture. He began working at CR Floral in New Rockford. Steve married Renee Smith on July 6, 1979, in New Rockford. They moved to Fargo where Steve worked for S&S Landscaping. They moved to Bismarck in November of 1981 where he became the manager of the new S&S branch. In 1986, he joined partnership in S&B Landscaping of Bismarck where he continued co-ownership until his death. He held numerous offices for North Dakota Nursery and Greenhouse Association. He served on the Bismarck Forestry Advisory Board, the North Dakota Centennial Tree Commission, and church council of Church of St. Anne. Those around Steve appreciated his strength, even temperament, work ethic, and sense of humor. Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating on the river, and volleyball safety meetings. Steve is survived by his wife, Renee; his daughter, Lisa Becker and her fiancÚ, Jerel Brandt; his son, Mitchell Becker, all of Bismarck; his mother, Virginia Becker of McHenry; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet and Keith Edlund of McHenry, and Diana and Steve Carney of Scobey, Montana; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Mark and Lisa of McHenry, and Tim and Natalie of New Rockford; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene. In lieu of flower arrangements at the funeral, the family requests that those arrangement monies be sent to St. Anne's Church Expansion Fund to be used for permanent plantings in Steve's memory.
