Adam Schmaltz

Adam Schmaltz, 89, Tappen, ND, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2009, at the Medcenter One Mandan Living Center with his family at his side. Services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Tappen, with Monsignor Jeffrey Wald and Rev. Jerome Hunkler officiating. Burial will be held in the spring. Visitation will be held from 1pm-7pm Friday at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Tappen, with an evening prayer service at 7pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Adam was born on January 25, 1920, in McIntosh County, Wishek, ND, the son of Peter and Katherine Heilman Schmaltz. He grew up on the family farm and completed school. Adam served in the US Army as Private First Class Company D 328th Medical Battalion during World War II. He received a Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart and Good Conduct Medal. Adam married Barbara Wald from Napoleon, ND, on May 20, 1946. In October 1947 they purchased their farm six miles northeast of Tappen. Adam and Barbara were members of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Tappen, as well as Adam being a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Adam enjoyed playing pinochle, fishing and dancing. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara, Tappen, ND; their children, Catherine Van Mitzel, Bismarck, ND, Dorothy Richard Wanner, Bismarck, ND, Petronia Laine, Bismarck, ND, Phyllis Jewell Mehlhoff, Tuttle, ND, Mary Ann Dale Wolf, Bethany, OK, and John Jody Schmaltz, Tappen, ND; his grandchildren, Christopher Kuhn, son of Dorothy and Rodney, Barbara Brian Williams and Matthew Mitzel, children of Catherine and Van, Paul and Jesse Laine and Amy David Trudeau, children of Petronia and Mike, Michael Wanda Mehlhoff, Tanna Mike Richard, and Jeremy Mehlhoff, children of Phyllis and Jewell, Jaci and Lisa Wolf, children of Mary Ann and Dale, Joshua Schmaltz, Joni Jerrod Lematta, and Julia Schmaltz, children of John and Jody; and 15 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren, Kim Ken Stenger and Jason Wanner, children of Richard Wanner, and two step great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Elmer; his grandsons, James and Lonnie Kuhn; his son-in-law, Rodney Kuhn; four younger brothers and brother, Sebastian; his sisters, Sister M. Petronia and Sister M. Lucina; and his parents.
