Adelle Joos

Adelle Joos, 86, Bismarck, died August 14, 2008, at her home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bismarck with Pastor Craig Schweitzer officiating. Burial will be at the ND Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 – 9:00 PM and Monday from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Visitation will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. As Adelle was quoted, “I was born on December 27, 1921, in Hickson, ND, in a hotel owned by my grandparents, where my parents lived. I was the only child of Walter and Ella Otteson. Shortly after I was born, we moved to Wolverton, MN, where I attended school K through 12th grade”. After graduating from high school, Adelle attended a business college in Fargo where she met her future husband, Lloyd, who was attending North Dakota State University. Adelle married Lloyd “Bud” Joos in 1944 in Wolverton. They made their home in Bismarck, where they built their own home on 11th Street and Boulevard, until 1963 when they moved to Wahpeton, ND. They returned to Bismarck in the late 1960s where they had since resided. She worked for the State of North Dakota and upon their move to Wahpeton, began working for the president of the State School of Science. When they returned to Bismarck, she worked for the State Board of Higher Education until she retired in the mid 1970s. Adelle was not one to be inactive and upon her retirement, immediately began serving the community volunteering at the old North Dakota State Governor’s Mansion. Adelle had an amazing connection with her friends and gave freely of her time to them, sometimes for years. She was deeply interested in North Dakota history, something that started later in her life. Adelle enjoyed supporting the North Dakota State Historical Society. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Darleen Joos of Hudson, NH; and her grandsons, Patrick and Mike of Hudson, NH. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1995; her infant daughter, Laura Lee; and her son, Brad.
