Alan Dean Traeholt

Alan Dean Traeholt, 57, Bismarck, passed away at home on June 29, 2011. A funeral service will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 5, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Nadine Lehr officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Alan, the son of Arne and Dorothy Cosby Traeholt, was born November 27, 1953, in Whitefish, Montana, and he grew up in Wolf Point, MT. He graduated from Montana State University in 1975 with a degree in Civil Engineering and in 1976 with a master's degree in Structural Engineering. On June 15, 1974, he married Karen Penner, his high school sweetheart. After graduating from college, they lived in Great Falls, MT, before settling in Bismarck, ND, in 1979. In Bismarck, he was a partner with his uncle, Jens Traeholt, of Traeholt Associates before merging with Ulteig Engineers. In 2010, he joined the firm of Advanced Engineering and Environmental Services. He was a longtime member of North Dakota Society of Professional Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers. Alan was always happy to volunteer his time to community activities. He was a proud member of the Farwest Rotary Club. He also enjoyed being a founding member of the championship trivia team, "The Lost Generation", as well as the "Plan B" curling team and the notorious "Ski Patrol". In addition, he worked with Troop 89 Boy Scouts, the Northridge PTO, church council, played in the Missouri River Community Band, and supported the Relay for Life. Alan is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karen, Bismarck, his daughter, Meredith, Bismarck, his sons, Ross, Rugby, and Owen, New York City; his parents, Arne and Dorothy, Wolf Point, MT; his sisters, Kay RD Snyder, Burnet, TX, Karen Gary Jeide, Wolf Point, MT, Kim Tim Klasna, Lambert, MT, Karla Robin Martinez, Billings, MT; his brothers- and sisters-in-law Jim Barb Penner, Helena, MT, Patti Darchuk, Issaquah, WA, Kristi Steve Kienberger, Berlin, Germany; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and extended family. Alan is also survived by many close friends. Sincere thanks is given for the kind and compassionate services of St. Alexius Hospice. The family requests memorials be made out to Lord of Life Lutheran Church or Central Dakota Children's Choir. Alan was dearly loved and will be missed.
