Albert R. Hausauer

Albert R. Hausauer, 81, formerly of Bismarck, died November 26, 2004, in Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, December 1, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas Kramer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 - 9 :00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a rosary will be held at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Albert Rudolph Hausauer was born August 2, 1923, in Jamestown, North Dakota. He was the son of Rudolph Hausauer and Katharine Hausauer Pietz. Albert graduated from Jamestown High School in the spring of 1941 and enrolled in the Dakota Business College in Fargo that fall. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska and at the University of Missouri School of Mines, working for a degree in engineering. World War II interrupted his education and he enlisted in the army and served as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne Division in the South Pacific. Following his honorable discharge, he enrolled at the University of North Dakota and received a degree in Business Administration and Accounting BSC and a Juris Doctorate degree in law. While at school, he participated in sports, receiving high school letters in football and hockey. He received letters in football from the University of Missouri School of Mines and from the University of North Dakota. At the University of North Dakota, he also received a letter in hockey as a member of the school's first post-WWII hockey team. Following his graduation from the University of North Dakota and his admission to the Bar, he entered into partnership with Roland A. Suess and they maintained an auditing and tax practice in Minot, Williston, and Bottineau for 12 years. In 1963 he accepted a position with the State Tax Department as Director of its Income Tax Division. In 1967, he assumed the post as Special Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Department. In that position he appeared before State and Federal Legislative Committees and argued cases before all levels of State and Federal Courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He was a member of the National Association of Tax Administrators, the Midwestern States Associations of Tax Administration, the Multi State Tax Commission and other state and local tax advisory and tax administration organizations. He was also a member of the American Bar Association and the North Dakota State Bar Association. Active in veterans' affairs, he was a member of the DAV, the American Legion, and the V.F.W. He served as Post Commander of the Minot VFW Post #753 and District Commander of the VFW District #3. He also was a member of the Elks, the Moose, and the Knights of Columbus. Albert Hausauer's avocation was genealogy and history. He was the founder of the Bismarck-Mandan Historical and Genealogy Society; a charter member of the American Historical Society of Germans From Russia; a charter member and officer of the North Dakota Historical Society of Germans from Russia; a member of the North Dakota State Historical Society, Inc; a board member of the North Dakota State Historical Society Board and Heritage Center Community; as well as other state, national and international genealogical and Historical Societies. On occasions he taught courses at Bismarck Junior College and lectured on Genealogy and Germans from Russia Heritage throughout the state. He was an avid hunter and an instructor in gun safety and hunting techniques. He also enjoyed horses and for several years was a member of the Custer's 7th Cavalry Memorial Regiment, participating in parades and group outings. He was active in the Democratic-NPL party, serving as precinct chairman, District Chairman and on various other state party boards and committees. In 1948, Albert married Mary Evelyn Meinhover in Bismarck at St. Mary's Church. Together they had five children. As the first college graduate in his family, he was pleased and proud that his children graduated from college and earned advanced degrees and hold professional licenses. Survivors include his wife, Mary Evelyn; five children, Sarah Jane Hausauer, a medical technologist in Minneapolis, Albert R. Hausauer, Jr., an attorney in California, Elizabeth Ann Dewald, a Controller at MedCenter One in Bismarck, and her husband, David, Mary Catherine Hauser, a Marriage and Family Therapist in Las Vegas, Nevada, and Theodore John Hauser, an educator and administrator in Clarksville, Tennessee, and his wife, Margaret; one brother, Rudolph John, California; three sisters, Mrs. Wayne Kelly Edna, Carrington, Mrs. Donald Raatz Clara, Bismarck, and Esther, Minneapolis; and six grandchildren. His father, mother, and one brother preceded him in death.
