Alfred Carl Schultz

Alfred C. Schultz, 94, Bismarck, died December 9, 2014, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 13, at Zion Lutheran Church in Bismarck with Rev. Thomas R. Marcis, Jr. and Rev. Douglas Bergelin officiating. Burial will be at the ND Veteran's Cemetery on Monday, December 15, at 10:00 am. His life will be celebrated at a prayer service on Friday, December 12 at 7:00 pm at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Alfred Carl Schultz was born in Devils Lake, ND, on September 16, 1920. He spent his youth hunting, farming, and looking after his little sisters, Lauraine and Myrtle. He was always a farmer at heart, checking the prices of land, wheat and livestock; even though he hadn't farmed in 70 years. Alfred attended Minot State Teacher's College before entering the Army Air Corp for pilot training in WWII. Due to family needs, he returned to his North Dakota farm. After struggling with erosion caused by wind and sandy soil, Alfred and his father, Carl, invented and patented the Schultz Mulcher. About this time, at a chance stop at the Upham cafe, Alfred met the love of his life, Evangeline Benson. After selling their mulcher patent, Alfred loaded up his Icelandic wife and their two small children, and headed off to law school at UND. Four years and two children later, Alfred graduated and began his career in law in Minot, ND. They moved to Bismarck when Alfred was hired to be the first fulltime director of the North Dakota Bar Association, a position he held for eleven years. In 1969, he was honored to be elected as the president of the National Association of Bar Executives, the only North Dakotan to ever hold that position. Alfred was very involved it the community. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, serving as an elder for many years. He founded the Zion Lutheran Church Foundation, providing scholarship and church support. He was on the Former Governor's Mansion Board of Directors for the State Historical Society, and enjoyed helping to support and host events at the historic mansion. He was the president of Sons of Norway, always joking that only a Norwegian would elect a German as their president. He was a Kiwanis member for close to fifty years, always respecting the professional network and contributions to the Bismarck area. Alfred was the proud father of seven children, sixteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. He had a quirky sense of humor saying things like "Eve is out shoplifting". He loved children, always having a lollipop handy. He made generations of kids laugh by tickling them or trapping them in an infamous Avi trap. Dad was always in the garage fixing or building something and pulling one of us kids in to help. He and his boys built the garage and a back deck off of the family home. We could always find him by following the sound of his whistling with "Beautiful Dreamer", "Paper Doll" and "Beautiful Doll" being some of his favorites. He always wanted to help anyone he could. He traded legal work for buckets of honey, quilts, afghans, chickens and a canoe. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Evangeline; children, Elizabeth Baskin Mort of Boyton Beach, FL, Charles Schultz Ardis of Camarillo, CA, Robert Schultz of Frisco, TX, Kathy Schultz of Dahlonega, GA, Nancy Thomas David of Powder Springs, GA, Susan Schmidt Max of Mandan, ND, and Mary Ann Knepler Gary of Frisco, TX; and his sister, Myrtle Schultz of Fargo, ND. He is preceded in death by his sister, Lauraine Waid, and grandchildren, Christopher Lien and Allen Schmidt. Memorials may be given to the Zion Lutheran Church Foundation or Martin Luther School at 413 East Ave D, Bismarck, ND 58501.
