Allan Bergland

Allan R. Bergland, 67, Bismarck, died February 2, 2007, at Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Bismarck Community Church with Rev. Maury Millican officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2:00 - 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Allan was born on August 19, 1939, in Webster, South Dakota, the son of Clifford and Myrtle Rohr Bergland. From 1945 - 1957, Allan attended schools in Aberdeen and McLaughlin, South Dakota, and Ellendale, Napoleon, and Mandan, North Dakota. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1957. While living in Mandan, Allan worked at Hoffman's Appliance Center. From 1957 - 1959, he attended Bismarck Junior College and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. Allan worked at First National Bank in Bismarck until 1961. In the fall of 1961, he attended Valley City State University, graduating in 1962 with a standard degree. From 1962 - 1964, he taught in Parshall, North Dakota, and from 1964 - 1966, he taught in Sidney, Montana. In 1966, Allan returned to Bismarck where he taught at several grade schools. On August 15, 1969, Allan was united in marriage to Mary Jeanne Suemper in Bismarck. Allan retired in 1997, and even though he was retired, he continued to substitute teach, deliver papers for the Tribune, and work at Taco Johns, until he was diagnosed with cancer in 2003. Allan was active in the Democratic Party and served as treasurer for District 32 for many years. He was an active member of Bismarck Community Church, where he served on the consistory and sang in the men's quartet. If there was a Dakota Wizards basketball game in town, you could find Allan there. He was an avid Wizard's fan and he enjoyed attending all of the games. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Mary Jeanne of Bismarck; two daughters, Corrie Jason Mayher and Heidi Bergland, both of Bismarck; two brothers and one sister and their families, Clifford Bergland Jr. of Spokane, Washington, Charles and Maryann Bergland of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jackie and Paul Meyer of Milwaukie, Oregon; two sisters-in-law and their families, Candy Terry Sherman of Albertville, Minnesota, and Dolores Bergland of Dayton, Ohio; one brother-in-law and his family, Herb Schlenker of Madras, Oregon; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Myrtle Bergland; his sisters, Maxine Schlenker and Glennis Bergland; his brother, Ralph Bergland; his sisters-in-law, Devy Bergland and Barbara Bergland; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Walter and Lela Davis Suemper. Allan's family would like to thank everyone on the Medcenter One oncology floor and all of the staff at Medcenter One Care Center in Mandan, as well as Medcenter One Hospice staff for all of the loving care that they provided.
