Alma Jean Carlson

Alma Jean Carlson, 92, formerly of Mandan, died October 27, 2005, at a Bismarck care center. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Baptist Home Chapel, Bismarck, with the Rev. Phil Schrauben officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday and 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the nursing home. Alma Jean Carlson was born on February 11, 1913, at Denhoff, ND, to Fred and Elizabeth Heer Herr. She was raised and received her early education at Denhoff and went on to receive a B.A. degree Cum Laude from Northwest Nazarene College at Nampa, ID, in 1948. Alma was an evangelist, lay minister, and teacher for many years. She pastored Nazarene churches at Benedict, Carrington, and Pleasant View, ND. She taught in several areas in North Dakota, including Sheridan, Renville, and Ward Counties. Alma Jean married Ernest Clarence Carlson in 1953 in Minot, where they resided for many years before moving to Mandan. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene in Mandan. She was a hard worker and believed strongly that a good education serves one well. She was a good Christian lady, and with devotion, honored God. Alma Jean had a passionate patriotism for her country and realized what a great price was paid by many in order to establish our freedom of thought and speech. She believed that people need to be honest with themselves and in their employment. Perhaps the highlight of her character was the ease at which she found humor in life, which in turn produced much laughter. Those who shared her time on earth will never forget the twinkle in her eye and the sparkle of her spirit. Alma Jean is survived by one sister, Lillian Sizemore of Sacramento, CA; her step-sisters, Peggy Giese of Bismarck and Ruth Reile of Fargo; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends on the Baptist Home staff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest; her parents; three sisters, Ida Harding, Elsa Almer, and Dorothy Zechmeister; three brothers, Edwin, Arthur, and Raymond; three half-brothers; two half-sisters; one step-sister; and one step-brother.
