Alvin W Borner

Alvin W. Borner, 86, Bismarck, passed away on July 15, 2013 at St. Gabriel's Community losing his battle with lymphoma. Services will be held on Friday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. at McCabe United Methodist Church with Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm Thursday, July 18, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Al was born on April 19, 1927, to Richard and Emelia Maas Borner on a farm near Stanton, N.D. He graduated from Stanton High School in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the Navy as he desired to be on board a ship. His typing skills resulted in him being assigned to typing discharge papers until his discharge. His family will remember the patriot, who flew the flag daily and was very excited to be on the Roughrider Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in September, 2010. Following his discharge, Al settled in Bismarck where he began his employment with Northwest Finance and later the State Bank of Burleigh County. Al married Almora L. Waltz on June 29, 1953, at the First Evangelical United Brethren Church that was located at 7th & Rosser. During their 60 years of marriage, Al always found time to enjoy visiting with friends who he had known for years or telling a story about an event from the past. There wasn't anyone who he could not converse with and always seemed to find something or someone that they had in common. He enjoyed bowling in his younger years and golf in later years. He has been a member of the American Legion for 67 years and a member of the Elks for 55 years. He is survived by his wife, Almora; daughter, Bonita Beth Clark Sonderby; granddaughters, Nicole Russell Santistevan and Shelbey Sonderby; brothers, Bob and Jim; and sisters, Dorothy, Florence, Beverly and Harriet. Al was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gordon, Glenn, Bill; and sisters, Frances, Junella and Ione. Memorials are requested to McCabe United Methodist Building Fund or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
