Arnold "Arnie" N. Sakshaug

Arnold Neil Sakshaug, 86, Bismarck, passed away on September 5, 2014, at St. Gabriel's Community. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 10, at 10:30 AM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Craig Schweitzer officiating. Internment service at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery south of Mandan, ND, is scheduled for 1:00 PM. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 9, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Arnold "Arnie" was born on November 29, 1927, in Sherwood, ND, the son of Alf and Nilia Sandberg Sakshaug. He grew up and attended school in Sherwood, ND, and graduated from Sherwood High School. After serving 18 months in the US Army, Arnie attended North Dakota State University, graduating in 1951 with a civil engineering degree and later in his career, obtained his professional engineering credential. Arnie married June Olney on July 3, 1952, in Valley City, ND. Arnie and June have lived in Bismarck ND for many years. Arnie worked with American Standard Oil in Newark, DE, Gary, IN, and in 1952, transferred to the Mandan, ND, refinery. After retiring in 1985, Arnie and June traveled the US and spent many winters in the Apache Junction/Mesa, AZ, area. Arnie enjoyed traveling, gardening – both flowers and vegetables, carving, reading about and visiting Lewis and Clark Historical Sites, and fishing. He loved to spend time with his whole family. Over the years, Arnie was active in church, Boy Scouts, Investment Club, Toastmasters, ND Society of Professional Engineers, Sons of Norway, Dakota Sunrise Good Sam's Camping Club, and Westerners. Arnie is survived by his wife, June of Bismarck; three daughters, Joan Kevin Bahr, Darlington, WI, Lynn Loren Johnson, Kenmare, ND, and Dawn fiancé, Joseph Elis Moore, Bismarck; grandchildren, Mark Kristin Gehringer, Houston, TX, Melissa Kristopher Knous, Port Washington, WI, Rebecca RJ Picchioni, Billings, MT, Kristin Steven McDonald, Sarles, ND, and Ryan Moore, Mandan, ND; step-grandson, Daniel Natalya Schwab Bahr, Belmont, WI; great-grandchildren, Anthony and Audrey Gehringer, Keaton and Brady Knous, Archer, Danielle, and Elizabeth Picchioni, Tanner, Caleb, and Parker McDonald, Fischer, Reegan, and Kaden Bahr; sisters-in-law, Jean Bell, Redlands, CA, and Sara Sakshaug, Fargo, ND; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Thomas Sakshaug; and sisters, Sarah Sundahl and Dora Edwards.
