Bernard Slag

Bernard Slag, 81, Bismarck, died December 5, 2006, at a Bismarck hospital with his family at his side. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 9:30 AM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan with military honors provided by VFW Post 1326. There will be no visitation. A life long resident of Bismarck, Bernard was one of ten children born to Frank and Hermina Leferink Slag who immigrated from Holland and homesteaded in Burleigh County on the Missouri River. Bernard attended St. Mary's School. He served his country in Italy in the Headquarters and Service Company. He was honorably discharged in December of 1946. He then attended and graduated from Capital Commercial College in 1947. He was employed by QB&R, New Marian Homes, Supercrete, and U.S. Noonlite. Bernard loved music and dancing. He sang in the Bismarck Light Opera Guild and the choir at St. Mary's Church where he enjoyed singing solos especially at midnight mass. He was a charter member of Church of Corpus Christi. He was a member of the VFW, past worthy president of the Eagles, and the Moose where he enjoyed a game or two with the boys. He was a RSVP volunteer for several years assisting the elderly with tax counseling. He was an ardent "Arm Chair Ref" for football games and most of his calls were right on target. He enjoyed fishing, pitching horseshoes, league bowling, and golf. Bernard was a faithful blood donor until he was prevented by ill health. He is survived by his wife, Iva; his daughter and son-in-law, Cindi and Charles Russell; his son, Jerry; and two much loved grandsons, Chris and Andy Russell, all of Bismarck. He is also survived by one sister, Maggie Wanner of Bowman, North Dakota; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Marion of Hebron, Tom and Leona of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Victor and Sue of Fargo, North Dakota; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents; his uncle, Fr. John Slag; two sisters, Mary Hesch and Jean Hanson; and three brothers, Joe, Bob, and his twin, Herman. Memorials may be sent to St. Jude?s, Make-A-Wish, or a charity of your choice. We, Bernard's family, want to express our appreciation and gratitude for all the help and kindness shown to him and us by the doctors, medical staff, and the employees at Medcenter One. A special "Thank You" to Dr. Tony Johnson for his wonderful care and concern over the past many years.
