Calvin Myers

Calvin "Cal" H. Myers, 94, Bismarck, North Dakota, died January 6, 2006, at MedCenter One. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 9, 2006, at Bismarck Community Church with the Pastor Maury Millican officiating. Burial will be at ND Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, North Dakota. Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 - 9:00 PM and Monday from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. Calvin was born on June 12, 1911, at Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of George David and Ida Mae Haisley Myers. The family moved to North Dakota in 1916, and Calvin grew up in the Werner and Dunn Center areas of North Dakota. For a short time, the family moved to Oregon City, Oregon, and then back to North Dakota. He received his education in Oregon and North Dakota. Calvin moved to Bismarck in 1929 and worked for Oscar H. Will and Co. filling orders for nursery stock and seed house. He also worked at the Broadway Grocery Store. After that he was employed at the Bismarck Tribune in shipping, receiving, and deliveries and following that in the Bindery Department at Capital Publishing. Calvin was a decorated war hero. He entered the United States Army in 1942 reporting to Ft. Snelling, Minnesota, and then being trained at Camp Barkley, Texas. He worked in communications, laid telephone wires, and answered phones. He also served time in Arizona, California, Fort Dix, New Jersey, and Camp Kilmore, New Jersey, before going overseas. In March 1944, he shipped for England. Calvin was with Patton's Third Army in Germany and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. 1st Sgt. Calvin H. Myers was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action. Having been previously wounded in the leg by shrapnel, Calvin was never evacuated and was with the combat forces from his entrance into Normandy on D-Day until he left for the trip home. In addition to the Silver Star, he wore the Purple Heart, the infantry combat badge, the good conduct badge and the ETO ribbon with three battle stars, representing the campaigns of Normandy, northern France, and Germany. After being honorably discharged from the service in 1945, Calvin began work in the Bindery Department at Bismarck Printing Co. In the fall of 1946, Calvin met the love of his life, Kathleen Mary Sheehy, while she was vacationing in North Dakota at her sister's home. Calvin and Kathleen were married on November 1, 1947, in The Bronx, New York. After their marriage, they lived in North Dakota for a short time and Calvin worked as a pressman for Bismarck Printing Co. and Conrad Publishing. In 1950, they moved back to New York and made their home in Rosedale, Long Island and Calvin worked at New Rochelle for Gavin Business Forms where he operated the collator. He also worked in Manhattan, New York for Commercial Bindery. They were blessed with a son, John D. Myers. Calvin's wife, Kathleen, passed away in 1961 and in 1963, Calvin and John returned to Bismarck where Calvin and his brother, George, opened Dakota Printing Company. He continued to work there until his retirement in 1979. Following his retirement, Cal continued to live in Bismarck and was a resident at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center since 2003. Calvin was a member of the Pressman's Union and American Legion. Calvin's greatest joy in life was his family and spending time with them. He was so proud of his grandchildren, Shanna Lee and Ryan John, and always interested in their activities and whereabouts - faithfully remembering them with gifts on birthdays, holidays, and special occasions. He always enjoyed having meals with family members and friends. Woodworking was a favorite pastime in his earlier years and watching TV and especially all the old movies and reruns, reliving earlier days shown on TV Land, was a major interest and enjoyment to him in his later years. His gentle, kind spirit and thoughtful and generous ways will always be remembered. His family will miss him greatly, but they will cherish the many fond memories of him in their hearts. He is survived by his son, John, and daughter-in-law, Audrey, Bismarck; two grandchildren, Shanna Josh Nordeen, Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Ryan Myers, Fargo, North Dakota; three nieces, Lyda Scharnowske, Mavis Fuher, and Linda Luray Biederstedt, Bismarck; and their families, Kerri Scharnowske, Kathy Kalvoda, Karen and Paul Munson, Robert and Dani Scharnowske, Katherine and Jay Link, Richard and Tanya Fuher, Heidi Biederstedt, Tyler Biederstedt, Kimberly Kalvoda, Kelly Kalvoda, Kayla Fuher, Grant Munson, Lexi Munson, Joseph Fuher, Hannah Fuher; sister-in-law, Bertha Myers; and special friends, Jay and Alfhild Ehrmantraut. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathleen; his sister, Alice McClellan; his brother, George C. Myers; sister-in-law, Eunice; and nephew, Richard Myers.
