Catherine Clarys

Catherine Vogel Clarys, 79, formerly of Menoken, died November 26, 2003, in a Bismarck care center. Services will be held 11:30 AM, Thursday, at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel, Bismarck with the Rev. James Shea officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Service, Mandan. There will be no public visitation. Catherine was born March 31, 1924, in Dickinson, ND, the daughter of Philip and Mathilda Frank Vogel. She received her elementary education at St. Joseph's School in Dickinson, ND. After finishing grade school, she attended Dickinson Central High, graduating in 1941. She then attended Long Beach Secretarial College. Upon completing the nine-month course, she applied at Security First National of Los Angeles, CA. She was accepted at the Long Beach, 4th and Cherry Branch. She began working as a file clerk, then bookkeeper, and a teller. She was employed there for a year and a half when she decided to return to North Dakota to be with her mother. She was then employed at 1st National Bank of Dickinson, where she met John Clarys. They were married June 13, 1946. She continued to work at the bank off and on. In 1949, they moved to the Rafter L. Ranch where her husband was foreman of the ranch. They stayed there until it was time for the children to attend school. Since there weren't any schools in the area they moved to Bismarck. Catherine was employed by 1st National of Bismarck. Her husband worked as foreman of different ranches in the area so the children could attend school. They later moved to Menoken. Catherine was Clerk/Treasurer of Menoken Township for ten years. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting, and raising flowers and animals. Catherine is survived by her five sons William Linda of Dayton WA, Robert of Cedar Rapids, IA, Richard Vicki of Richardton, ND, Dennis of Linton, ND, and John C. Deborah of Carson, ND; one daughter, Reva Gary of Maryland; thirteen grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, four brothers, Joe, Lawrence, Rudolph, and Peter, two sisters, Elizabeth Walter and Magdalen Wehner, and one nephew, Lawrence J. Vogel The family would like to extend special thanks to Melissa Muggerud and Judy Krueger for the their visits in her last days. A funeral mass will also be offered in memory of Catherine at St. Hildegard's Parish at Menoken at 9:00 AM, Thursday. A rosary will be said 15 minutes prior to the start of the mass. Luncheon to follow provided by St. Hildegard's Altar Society.
