Charles B. Nygaard

Charles Bradley Nygaard, 80, Mandan, passed away on November 4, 2011, at home under St. Alexius Hospice Care. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 12:30 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Darrel Aleson officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at ND Veteran's Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 - 8:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service and will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Charles "Charlie" was born on December 26, 1930, in Woodworth, ND, to G.W. "Bill" and Rose Dotson Nygaard, the fifth of eleven children. He graduated from Moorhead High School in 1949. His first "real" job was as a lineman for Northwest Bell in 1950. Charlie was drafted in 1951 into the U.S. Army and served in Okinawa during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged in 1953. He then moved to Williston with Northwest Bell and married Patricia Boyce in 1954. Charlie and Pat were blessed with five children. In 1975, he married Kathryn Staudinger Weigum and added her three children to his family. Charlie retired in 1986 from Northwest Bell/AT & T. Throughout Charlie's life, he was involved in sports and played basketball in high school. He also enjoyed bowling, softball, horseshoes, and later, golf, with the joy of hitting two "holes in one". Many organizations benefited by his volunteering spirit, including the Salvation Army and Junior Achievement. He was an active member of Telephone Pioneers, VFW, and Amvets. Charlie was a ready source of help and information to all that knew him. He was a great father figure to many. His family will miss his great sense of humor. Charlie is survived by his wife, Kathryn "Kay"; his children, Melanie Marv Behounek, Sherie Dale Johnston, Kathryn Gary Alt, Judy Al Schaff, Bruce Pricilla Nygaard, Steve Diane Nygaard, Jeff Jolene Nygaard, and Dean Carol Weigum; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; his sisters, Gladys Finch, Florence Wieber, Hazel Campbell; his brothers, William "Buddy" Nygaard and Eugene Aggie Nygaard; his sisters-in-law, Ingrid Nygaard and Susan Nygaard; and his brother-in-law, Larry Lovelace. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Ruth Summers and Geraldine Lovelace; his brothers, George, Gordon, and John Nygaard; and his grandsons, Sam Grenz and Ben Carlson.
