Clarence Berg

Clarence Berg, 85, Driscoll, ND, died in his sleep on May 29, 2014, surrounded by his family who loved him deeply. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at Bismarck Community Church, 1617 Michigan Avenue, Bismarck, with Rev. Cori Waisanen officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 PM at the ND Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4:00 – 9:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Clarence was born on September 6, 1928, in Arena, ND, to Jacob and Anna Ensz Berg. He grew up in the Burleigh County area and settled in rural Driscoll, ND. He was drafted into the United States Army and served as a corporal in the Korean War. He was fiercely patriotic and was very proud of his service to our nation; he considered it an honor and moral obligation to this great country. He paid close attention to constitutional issues throughout his life, and ran for State Representative in the 1970s. Clarence served on Clear Lake Township's board for over forty years and was a Driscoll School Board member for a number of years. Clarence married his one and only girlfriend, Garnet Belile on July 1, 1959, in Driscoll. Five years later they bought a farm site north of Driscoll, ND. Together, they strived to be self-reliant. They raised beef cattle and plentiful gardens to help feed their four biological and three adopted children: Melinda, Daniel, Clarence Aaron Korena, Wendy Patrick O'Neill, Robert, Benjamin, and James; and his sixteen grandchildren. All of the family lives in North Dakota. In addition to these permanent family members, Clarence and Garnet were foster parents to over forty children. He is also survived by his sister, Ardis Funston of Sterling, ND, and his brother, Edwin Linda Berg of Garden City, KS. Clarence had a very strong faith in Jesus that started when he was twenty-seven years old. It has carried him and his family through hardships and joys until he met his Saviour face to face. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents, and his siblings, Edna, Lena, William, Nadine, Alfred, Rudolph, and Kenneth.
