Dean D Gunsch

Dean Dwight Gunsch died peacefully at his home on August 27, 2012. He was born on September 19, 1953, in Bismarck, ND, to Emil and Rosemary Gunsch. He graduated from ND State College of Science in Wahpeton and worked in private industry for several years before beginning his teaching career at BSC in 1978. As a professor in the Automotive Technology program, he served his students and community well for 34 years. He served as program chair and later as Transportation and Construction Department Chair. Dean led the effort to achieve certification for Automotive Technology from the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation in 1990 and the ASE National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence certification for faculty. He compiled and wrote the lengthy application that gave Automotive Technology Program the designation as best college program in the nation in 1992 from the Automotive Industry Planning Council. In 1993, Dean won a top educator award for achieving the highest score in the nation on the Automotive Service Excellence advanced engine performance test. He served on the faculty Senate and several other committees. Dean always believed his students were his top priority and gave his job meaning. Dean's passion for sailing was enjoyed from the Great Lakes, the Gulf of Mexico, the Sea of Cortez and of course, his home away from home, Lake Sakakawea. His active lifestyle and love of the great outdoors showed through in his activities. He enjoyed long distance bicycling, hiking, backpacking, river canoeing, kayaking, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, geocaching, windsurfing and of course his true passion sailing. Dean's great thirst for knowledge always kept him researching and learning about everything he could. He loved to share his knowledge and always helped others out whenever possible. Dean is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diane; one son, Jesse Kelly Gunsch and a grandson, Dominic; his mother, Rosemary Gunsch; and one sister Peggy Al Gustin. He was preceded in death by his father, Emil Gunsch, who passed away August 2, 2012. The family invites you to join them in a service at 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 8, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck.
