Diann Flanagan

Diann Dorothy Flanagan, 68, Bismarck, died unexpectedly May 6, 2008, at her home in Bismarck. Services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday at Parkway Funeral Service Chapel, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck with Rev. Murray Phillips and Rev. John Flanagan officiating. Burial will be 9:00 am Monday in the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 9:00 pm Friday at Parkway Funeral Service where family will greet visitors from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Visitation will continue from 9:00 am until 11:00 am Saturday at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck. Diann was born on August 27, 1939, in Bismarck, North Dakota, the second daughter of John and Elizabeth Grimm David. She grew up in Bismarck and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1957. Diann graduated from Bismarck Junior College in 1959. She married Patrick Flanagan on June 27, 1964 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bismarck. Diann worked for Workman's Compensation for the State of North Dakota until June 1965. Diann and Patrick's first daughter Julie was born July 2, 1965, their second daughter Patricia was born October 25, 1966 and their son Patrick was born August 7, 1969. From June of 1965 through 1987 Diann was employed as a homemaker raising her children with the occasional daycare job. Following the graduation of her three children Diann once again entered the professional work force, working for the North Dakota Newspaper Association and from the summer of 1993 until her death she worked for Marshall Lumber Company, Mandan, as a bookkeeper with her lifelong friend LaVyrl Feland of Mandan, North Dakota. Diann loved playing games and spending time with her five grandchildren, letting them win until they were old enough to beat her fair and square. She had a very special bond with her grandson Jesse, decoding secret messages, daily phone calls, shopping, and heated games of checkers at the library. During her life she enjoyed league bowling, craft projects, genealogy searching and learning new things on the computer. Diann was actively involved in Girl Scouting as a girl and as a Girl Scout Leader, leading her daughters' troop. She especially enjoyed the times she and Pat spent with his sisters, brothers and their families. Diann is survived by her husband of 43 years, Patrick, her daughter Julie, and her husband, Murray Phillips and their children LeAnne and Sean, of Whiteside Missouri; daughter Patty, and her husband Jerry Mitchell and their sons Jesse and Justin, of Mandan; and son Patrick and his wife Connie and their daughter Cori, of Menoken. She is also survived by her brother Robert Elaine David and sister Kathy Ken Lake, all of Bismarck; brothers and sisters-in-law Wanda John Lamontagne, Inez Ryberg, Mike Flanagan, Ramona Jerry Birdsell, John Faye Flanagan, David Flanagan, Danny Flanagan, Elmer Daarud and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father John; mother Elizabeth; sister Betty Daarud; brother Douglas David; special aunt, Katheryn Rix; brother-in-law Jerry Ryberg and sister-in-law Alvina Flanagan. Memorials may be given to the family or to the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan.
