Doris Potter

Rev. Doris Louise Lampman Potter, 90, passed away peacefully after a stroke on Monday, October 5. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Jake Kincaid officiating. Burial will be held at 10:00 am Monday at North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm Saturday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Doris Lampman was born February 1, 1919, in Valley City, the second daughter of Clifford and Inga Lampman. The family moved from their farm in Oriska to Bismarck where Doris graduated from Bismarck High in 1936. She married Alwyn Potter in Bismarck in 1940. They had three children. At age 57, Doris retired from her career as an executive secretary at AGSCO in Grand Forks to enter the University of North Dakota as a freshman. After graduation she attended United Theological Seminary in the Twin Cities and was ordained as a Presbyterian Minister on her 65th birthday. Rev. Potter ministered to two congregations, Meadow and Bison, South Dakota, until her final retirement at age 79. In 1998 she moved back to Bismarck where she lived independently to her death. Doris was reputed to be an excellent bridge player at the Bismarck Seniors Center. She was an avid reader and a dedicated fan of the Minnesota Twins. She supported Prairie Public Radio, the Fort Abraham Lincoln Foundation, UNICEF and the First Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her brother, Ora; her daughter, Susan Shipman, Steilacoom, Washington, and sons, Wayne Potter and wife, Barbara, Natchez, Mississippi, and Tracy Potter and wife, Laura Anhalt, Bismarck. Doris will be missed by six grandchildren, Kristin Haskins and husband Mark, Christine Hartley and husband Jay, Jennifer Dahlk, Michael Shipman, Tod Potter and wife Stephanie, and Vaughn Potter, and five great-grandchildren, Shana, Hayden and Brennan Hartley, Hannah Potter and Suza Beck Haskins, with another Potter arriving any day now. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Alwyn; sisters, Lillian Aarvig, Donna Huyck and Joyce Schmidt; brothers, Clifford, Dean, James, Theodore and Robert.
