Dorothy Kempel

Dorothy Kempel, 88, Bismarck, died December 11, 2006. Services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Lisbon with Rev. Thomas R. Marcis, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm Thursday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Lisbon. Burial will be held in Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon. Dorothy was born on March 20, 1918, at Gwinner, ND, the daughter of Elvie Busch-Week, Louis Busch and Syvert Week. She grew up and attended school in the Sargent County area. She lived for a brief time in Chicago before moving to Los Angeles where Dorothy met Daniel Kempel. On March 21, 1943, they were married in Glendale, CA. They made their home in Los Angeles until moving to Buttzville, ND, where they owned and operated the general store and post office. They later moved to Lisbon where Dorothy worked at the ND Veteran's Home. While living in Lisbon, Dorothy was active in Redeemer Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday school teacher, on the Ladies Aid and sang in the choir. She was also an EMT and served on the State Testing Team for EMT's. In 1994, they moved to Fargo and in 2004, Dorothy moved to the Waterford in Bismarck. Dorothy loved to knit and crochet, winning many blue ribbons in the Ransom County Fair. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Evelyn Mark Orth of Bismarck, ND, Alyce Welder of Lake City, FL, and Eleanor Hovland Michael Briggs of Fargo, ND; her sons, Dennis Kempel of San Leandro, CA, and Darrel Kempel of Scollsbluff, NE; her brothers, Donald Judy Week of Braunfels, TX, and Kenneth Joanne Week of Carson City, NV; her sisters-in-law, Ellie Week, Ardoth Week, Lydia Rotenberger, and Francis Fadness; her brothers-in-law, Theodore Hazel Kempel and Emmanuel Kempel; her grandchildren, Adrian Michelle Orth, Tiffany Christopher Sandison, Aric Holly Hanson, Gregory Alyse Welder, Angel Hanson, Elliott Welder, Christopher Kempel, Cassandra Kempel, Aaron Kempel, Ira Hovland, April Hovland, Heather Hovland, and Andrew Hovland; and her eleven great-grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband; her infant daughter; her parents; her step-father; her four brothers, Lawrence, Robert, David, and Richard; and her son-in-law, James Welder.
