Dr. William McCullough

Dr. William Fred McCullough, 78, Mandan, died June 11, 2006, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church in Bismarck with the Rev. Jacob Kincaid officiating. Burial will at the ND Veterans Cemetery with military honors provided by VFW Post 1326. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 - 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. William "Bill" was born on September 13, 1927, in Bottineau, North Dakota, the son of Fred and Laura Monroe McCullough. He was raised and attended school in Bottineau and graduated from Bottineau School of Forestry. After attending the University of North Dakota, Colorado School of Medicine, and the University of Minnesota School of Radiology; he completed one year of internship and 1 1/2 years of residency in surgery and ob/gyn at St. Luke's Hospital in Fargo. Bill worked in Bottineau for five years and then in Bismarck for Central Dakota Radiologists at St. Alexius Medical Center until retirement. On July 25, 1956, Bill married Carol Opperman of Chaffee, North Dakota. He served as a flight surgeon in the US Air Force for two years and in the North Dakota National Guard for 25 years. In 1987, he retired as a "Full Bird" Colonel from the Happy Hooligans. Bill lived an extraordinary life, touching many lives. He spent 72 summers at Lake Metigoshe in one of the first cabins on the lake. Hunting was Bill's favorite activity. Fall was for the birds - grouse, duck, geese, and then pheasants. He was a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited. He chased deer in all parts of North Dakota and western Montana. Many trips were spent chasing elk, moose, and bear, and summers fishing. Bill and Carol traveled extensively exploring the United States and the world. Bill is survived by his wife of nearly fifty years, Carol of Mandan; his daughter and son-in-law, Kristy and Alan Little of Baldwin; his sons and daughters-in-law, Marshall and Mari of Fargo, and Cameron and Mary of Bismarck; his grandchildren, Mike and Alyssa Little, Connor, William Finn, and Shane McCullough, Justin Berndt, and Tom McCullough; and his sister and brother-in-law, Colleen and Lowell Helgerson of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorials may be given to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery and Ducks Unlimited.
