Edward Martin

Edward R. "Pepper" Martin, 84, Bismarck, died July 20, 2005. Services will be held at 10 AM Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with the Rev. Paul Eberle officiating. Burial will be at the ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan with Military Rites provided by the VFW Post 1326. Visitation will be held from 1-5 PM Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service and from 6-9 PM at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit where a Vigil will be held at 7 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Ed was born August 11, 1920 in Glen Ullin, ND the eldest son of Nick and Anna Fischer Martin. He was raised and educated in Bismarck. Ed entered the Army of the United States and served from 1941 to 1945 in England. He met Mary Doll on July 17, 1946, and they were married February 17, 1947, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. During his lifetime, Ed worked for Decorator's Supply, Bismarck Paint and Glass, Jewel Tea, Burlington Northern Transport, and Century Mercury Freight Lines. Ed was a life member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, as well as the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a charter member of the Teamster's Retirees 123. Ed was an active member of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit for over fifty years. Ed enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, watching game shows, gardening, bird watching, going to the casino, and Easter egg hunts. He enjoyed going out for breakfast with family. Going to sporting activities to watch his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was a highlight in Ed's life. Ed is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary, Bismarck, ND; three sons, Tom, Valley City, ND; Ken Bev, Monument, CO; and Bill Paula, Bismarck, ND; five daughters, Patty Vern Thorp, Aurora, CO; Michele, Medora, ND; Deb TJ Hopfauf, St. Anthony, ND; Alberta Mike Swartz, Jamestown, ND; and Carol Don Redmann, Jamestown, ND. He is also survived by one daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Martin, Bismarck; 15 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. He also leaves four sisters, Rose Schafer, Tacoma, WA, Florence Richard Ereth, Sr. Audrey, Annunciation Priory, and Virginia Julius Brigl, all of Bismarck, ND; three brothers, Clarence "Boyd", Bismarck, ND; Francis Akiko, Santa Ana, CA; and Johnny Sharlene, Antelope, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Richard "Dick"; his parents; two sisters, Ann and Josephine; two brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Ed was a friend to and loved by all who met him. He will be dearly missed. Godspeed. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to BACEF, Annunciation Priory, ND Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, or donor's choice.
