Elizabeth Regina Smith

Elizabeth "Betty" Smith 88, died Nov. 25, 2010, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck surrounded by those who deeply loved her. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM Tuesday, Nov. 30, at Church of St Anne, Bismarck, with the Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be at St Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 PM Sunday and from 9 AM to 9 PM Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, where a rosary and vigil service will begin at 7 PM Monday. Betty was born August 8, 1922 to Charles and Helen O'Callaghan Farrell of rural Hazelton. Betty attended the local Rural School and Hazelton High School. She grew up on the family farm near Hazelton later moving to Bismarck. She was very proud of her Irish heritage. She married Lawrence W. Smith of rural Mandan on October 28, 1946, after he returned from serving in WWII. They resided in Mandan until moving to Bismarck in 1955. Betty operated a child care business out of her home from the mid 60s until 1992. Her husband Lawrence helped her with this business after his retirement from Massey Ferguson. They cared for and grew to love many children throughout the Bismarck- Mandan area. Betty's passion was children and she became very close with their parents creating a large extended family. She touched many lives and many lives touched hers. Betty was a charter member of St Anne's Parish since 1955. She was a life member of the Catholic Daughters, Elks, VFW, American Legion and UCT. She enjoyed entertaining at her home and was well-known for her excellent meals and baked goods. There was always a cup of coffee and a treat waiting for you when you dropped in. Betty and Lawrence loved to go camping in their motor home throughout the United States. Even before the convenience of a motor home, they would load the kids in the car and off to the Black Hills, Yellowstone or Seattle they would go. This joy of traveling to see the America they loved has passed on to their children and grandchildren. Beloved and loving Mother and Grandmother; her love, kindness, patience and friendship will be dearly missed. She is survived by her children, Larry Mary Smith, Roger Smith, Donna Loren Coyle, David Sandy Smith and Patrick Marie Smith; her grandchildren, Michael Smith David, Ben and Joey Pat Smith and Steven Larry Smith; brother, Paul Farrell & his wife, Clementine; sisters-in-law, Ann Smith and Shirley Marek; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Lawrence in 2002; her parents; two brothers and their wives, Jim and Marie Farrell and Jack and Eunice Farrell; sisters, Marie Rush and Margaret Taylor; niece, Helen Siegel; one nephew, Mike Farrell and one great niece Diane Pinks.
