Elmer Hoover

Elmer Hoover, 79, Bismarck, died April 22, 2014 at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, April 28, 2014, at Bismarck Baptist Church, 2211 LaForest Ave, with Rev. Allen Finger officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Elmer V. Hoover was born February 14, 1935, in Bismarck to Alfred and Geraldine Hoffman Hoover. He attended elementary school in Moffit and graduated from Bismarck High School in 1955. Elmer worked in construction, building grain elevators throughout North Dakota. He was later employed by the state doing soil testing, by the Hazleton School system and eventually by the Sweetheart Bakery in Bismarck where he worked for 23 years. When the bakery closed, Elmer completed his career years pursuing his love of bus driving. He drove for the Baptist Home, Shiloh Christian School, and Bismarck Baptist Church. Elmer married Hazel Cunningham in 1956 and they had four children. He married Darleen Hochhalter in 1984. At his death, Elmer and Darleen were just two weeks short of thirty years of marriage. Elmer was known for his cheerful disposition and his servant attitude. He loved his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren's birthday celebrations. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Darleen; daughter, Kathy Vollmers; son, Kenneth Hoover; daughter, Laurie Martin all of Bismarck; and son, Daniel Angie Hoover of Minot; grandchildren, Alicia, Melanie, Travis, and Megan Vollmers, Joshua and Nathan Hoover, Heather Walther, Logan Johnson, Alainna and Mason Martin, and Daynen Hoover; plus six great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Bryan and Greg Hochhalter; nine step-grandchildren, and three step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers, Vern Barb and Harry Hoover; and his sister, Connie Andrews. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother-in-law, James Andrews. Memorials can be given to Bismarck Baptist Church, Shiloh Christian School, or Baptist Healthcare Center.
