Erna Nagel

Erna Nagel, 93, Bismarck, died June 19, 2008, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church in Bismarck with Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be at the Lehr City Cemetery at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 - 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the church. Erna was born on May 25, 1915, north of Lehr, ND, the daughter of Solomon and Maria Erbele Fandrich. She grew up on the family farm and was educated in rural Logan County. She continued to live at home until her marriage to Walter Nagel on November 15, 1932, which took place at her parents’ home north of Lehr. Erna and Walter farmed east of Lehr until March 1966, when they moved to Bismarck, ND. Erna worked for Medcenter One in the dietary department for 22 years until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Medcenter One Auxiliary, English Singers, Germans from Russia, and was active in the Women’s Missionary Society. She donated countless hours of her time embroidering dishtowels for Medcenter One Sewing and Crafts. She dearly loved her family and enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren grow up. She cherished the friendships she had with the ladies in the Sewing and Crafts Club and ladies circle group at church. Her hobbies included embroidering, quilting, music, and gardening. She had a great faith in God. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Arvilla and Dale Ketterling of Wishek, ND; six grandchildren, DelRoy Cindy Ketterling, Doreen Blair Bechtle, Daphne Randy Hauck, Bryan Kauk, Marissa Robert Mertes, and Robert Nagel; twelve great-grandchildren, Kristen and Amber Ketterling, Michael, Stephanie, Amy, and Aaron Bechtle, Derek, Danielle, and Nathan Hauck, Rachel and Jenessa Mertes, and Dustin Nagel; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Gerhart Reggie Fandrich of Bishop, CA, Ervin Lauralee Fandrich of FL, and Hattie Fandrich of Oakes, ND; three sisters, Lydia Reich of Sacramento, CA, Edna Ketterling of Bremerton, WA, and Irene Hemphill of Fresno, CA; and many nieces, nephews, and good friends. Erna was preceded in death by her husband, Walter; her daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Paul Kauk; her son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Jennie Nagel; her granddaughter, Darnell Ketterling; her parents; three brothers, Emil, Gottlieb, and Lawrence; and two sisters, Elsie Edwards and Helen Foss.
