Ervin Hagel

Ervin Hagel, 75, Bismarck, formerly of Steele, ND, passed away on July 11, 2010, at Edgewood Vista. Services will be held at 3:00 pm Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, with Rev. Jacob DeBoer officiating. Burial will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Steele. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Ervin was born February 22, 1935, to Adolf and Kathrina Hagel, on a farm SE of Tappen, ND. The family later moved to their permanent home closer to Tappen. Ervin attended school at Tappen and in 1957 was inducted into the army. After basic training, he served his time in Germany. On July 8, 1960, Ervin and Grace Harriet Vellenga were married. They lived on the farm near Tappen until 1962. They then purchased a farm SW of Steele in Crown Hill Township, which was their permanent home. They raised three girls, Cynthia, Connie, and Peggy. Ervin was active in community affairs; Crown Hill Township Board, Trinity Lutheran Church Council, and 30 years on the Rural Fire Department. Ervin also served several years on the Kidder County Soil Conservation Board. Ervin enjoyed spending time with friends and family and going on trail rides in the Badlands. He loved giving hugs, had a great sense of humor, and loved to tease people. He also enjoyed dancing, playing cards, and water fights. Ervin is survived by his three daughters, Cynthia Hagel Ray Fleck, Grand Forks, ND, Connie Alden Fitterer, Tuttle, ND, and Peggy Lance Akers, Pelican Rapids, MN; his four grandchildren, Monica and Michelle Fitterer and Alecia and Cameron Akers; two brothers, Hilbert Hagel, West Fargo, ND, and Ferdinand Hagel, Hazen, ND; two sisters, Emma Kramlich, Medina, ND, Leah Reuer, Bismarck, ND, and many nieces and nephews. Ervin was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Harriet; his parents; his sisters, Tena and Ida; and his brothers, Edwin, Dave, Walt, and Julius. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Steele Fire Department or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
