Eugene John Adams

Eugene Adams 84, passed away on October 13, 2011, at the Medcenter One Mandan Living Center in Mandan, ND. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 18, at the Zion United Methodist Church in Tappen, with Rev. Elmo Herman officiating. Burial will be in Fisher Cemetery, Tappen. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Eugene John Adams was born July 8, 1927, to Olmstead Adams and Ida Mason Adams. He attended Manning Township Rural School #8 and Steele High School, Steele, ND, until joining the United States Navy Seabees serving in Guam for one year. He then returned to the family farm until 1953. Eugene married Elda Koon on June 20, 1950. In 1953, they moved to Dickinson, North Dakota, where Gene began working for Consolidated Freightways as a truck driver. In 1954, they moved to Bismarck, North Dakota, where Gene started to drive for Dan Dugan and Transport, Inc. From 1955-1970, he worked for Standard Oil Refinery of Mandan, North Dakota. In 1970, Gene and Elda owned and operated Adams' Grocery in Tappen, ND, until they retired in 1995. He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Tappen, and also was a lay leader, Sunday school teacher, and youth leader for many years. Gene and Elda were inducted into the Dakotas United Methodist Youth Workers Hall of Fame in 1994. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a longtime fire chief for the fire department in Tappen. Also, he was active in Lions, Gideons International, and on the Tappen city council. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and later in life, embroidery work. He was very proud of all of his family. Eugene is survived by his wife, Elda Koon Adams of Steele; four sons: Kenneth Adams Darlene Stanford-Adams of Valley City, ND; Loren Adams of Dickinson, ND; Bruce Cathy Adams of Lead, SD; and James Rebecca Adams of Beach, ND; sisters, Jo Ellen Aichele of Steele; and Grace Hanson of Fosston, MN; brothers, Wade Adams of Truth or Consequences, NM; Tom Adams of Dickinson, ND, seven grandchildren, Calli, Amy, Evan, Noah, Jadyn, Isabelle, and Rae Anna; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Laura Mae and Ruby Pitzen; brothers, Lee Adams and Harris Adams.
