Evelyn Irene Zimmerman

Evelyn I. Zimmerman, 90, Bismarck, died February 18, 2015, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, February 23, at the Dawson Community Building, with Rev. Jacob DeBoer officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at the Dawson City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:30 – 8:00 pm Sunday, February 22, at the Eastgate Steele Memorial Chapel in Steele, ND, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Evelyn Irene Zimmerman was born December 2, 1924, at Dawson, ND, the daughter of Robert F. and Annette Hatfield Schmidt. She was raised near Dawson and received her elementary education at Liberty School. After graduation from Dawson High School, Evelyn completed a summer course at Valley City State Teacher's College. She taught rural schools south of Dawson and Napoleon for three years. For a couple of summers, Evelyn worked at a cannery in California and at a research lab in Berkley, CA. Evelyn married Isedor Zimmerman on June 15, 1946, while in Berkley. They returned to North Dakota in the fall of that year, settling on a farm near Dawson. After 36 years, the couple moved to Steele, ND. Twenty-one years later, in 2004, they moved to Bismarck. Evelyn was a member of Dawson Lutheran Church and its A.L.C.W. women's group. She enjoyed square dancing, quilting, crocheting, gardening, and raising beautiful flowers. Her children and grandchildren were the grateful recipients of her creative work. Evelyn deeply loved her grandchildren and always enjoyed time spent with them. Evelyn was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her family and many good friends. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Steve Voeller, Rugby, ND and their children, Laurie Chuck Volk, Kerri Todd Allmaras, Michael Heidi Voeller, and Jamie Jeremy Wald; her daughter, Jan Manske, Hankinson, ND, and her children, Tara Clint Dowty, and Shelly Manske; her son and daughter-in-law, Gene Pat Zimmerman, Dawson, and their children, Heather Shaun Aarhus and Bradley Lisa Zimmerman; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Catherine Lang, Bismarck, Ruth Eichele, Napoleon, Marilyn Wesley Naish, OR, and Jeanette Albert Meidinger, Bismarck; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Ellis Camille Schmidt, Dawson, and Viona Zimmerman, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Issy; her parents; her sister, Geneva Schultz; four brothers, Walter, Lewis, Arne, and Robert E. Schmidt; and her son-in-law, Jerry Manske. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Dawson Lutheran Church or the Dawson City Cemetery.
