Floyd S. Halverson

Floyd Sylvan Halverson, 77, Bismarck, died April 23, 2014, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. A memorial services will be held on Friday, May 9, at 11:00 AM at Bismarck Baptist Church in Bismarck with Rev. Merle Hoots officiating. Cremation has taken place. Military graveside services by ND National Guard and the VFW Post #1326 will be held at Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday, May 8, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, and will continue on Friday one hour prior to the service at the church. Floyd was born June 12, 1936, in Carson, ND, the son of Raymond and Laura Ellis Halverson. He attended elementary school in Chicago and Ellendale, Illinois, Bismarck Junior High and High School, leaving before graduation to enlist in the US Army in August of 1953. Floyd served 18 months in Korea and was honorably discharged in October 1956. He joined the Army National Guard in 1976 and retired as an E8 in 1996. Floyd considered it an honor to serve in the guard. Floyd married Rose Reinhardt on January 3, 1959, in Chicago. The couple returned to Bismarck in 1963 and opened, "Floyd's Food Center." Floyd had an extensive employment career; newspaper boy, concrete worker, dock worker, truck driver, janitorial and maintenance, club manager, all-around maintenance and grounds keeper for USDA-Northern Great Plains Research in Mandan, retiring from there in 1997. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, serving on the board of directors and as gaming manager. He also served many years as a township supervisor for Hay Creek Township-reluctantly resigning in April. Floyd was a dedicated gardener, who nurtured his own seedlings in his greenhouse, and truly delighted in planting and sharing the fruits of his labor. He was an ardent reader and enjoyed the written word the old-fashioned way, in a real book; and always made sure he had a few by his side. Floyd is survived by his wife, Rose; his son, Daniel Jane, Bismarck; step-grandchildren, Geoffrey Nelson, Bismarck, and Amy Beehler, Minneapolis, MN; his brother, Lewis, Portland, OR; his sister, Darlene Jerry Logan, Port Charlotte, FL; his sisters-in-law, Adel, Portland, OR, and Helen Rehn, Bismarck, Irene Reinhardt, Sterling, and Ozella Reinhardt, Grand Forks; close cousin, Ronald Martha Halverson, Caldwell, ID; his nieces, nephews, several cousins; and his devoted "side-kick" Buddy, a silky terrier. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard and James; three sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; four nephews; and two nieces. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Friends of the Library and Bismarck Cancer Center.
