Frieda Martin

Frieda Christiana Martin, 92, Steele, North Dakota, passed away on April 22, 2006, with her loving husband and daughters at her side. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, April 26, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church in Tappen with Rev. Carl Lindemann and Rev. William Russow officiating. Burial will be at Fisher Cemetery in Tappen. Visitation will be Monday from 6 PM - 9 PM and Tuesday from 9 AM - 12 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck and Tuesday from 3 PM - 9 PM at Eastgate Steele Chapel where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Frieda Christiana Werre was born on September 1, 1913, in Kidder County to Jacob and Katherina Kaiser Werre. She grew up on the family farm south of Tappen with six sisters and three brothers. On January 15, 1935, she married Walter Martin. They farmed south of Tappen until 1945 when they moved into town and built a farm on the southeast side. Frieda worked intermittently as a clerk in the two grocery stores and also was a cook at the school. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting. She made many quilts for her children and grandchildren. They farmed until 1979 when they built a new home, retired, and moved into Bismarck. In their retirement years, they raised a large garden and Frieda was especially proud of her flowers. She traveled extensively during her retirement years. Frieda and Walter were lifelong members of the Lutheran Church. Frieda was active in her church where she taught Sunday and Bible School and belonged to the Ladies Aid and the choir. She spent many hours volunteering her time when St. John's church was built in 1959. After moving to Bismarck, Frieda was active at Our Savior's Lutheran Church where she was a member. They had two daughters, Gloria and Shirley. Mom and Dad were very faithful in attending all the family gatherings while their health permitted. Dad always carried the "baby" which was either pigs in the blanket or cheese buttons wrapped in a blanket. In the summertime, it was a cooler with the first jar of pickles and the first ripe tomatoes. Frieda and Walter celebrated 71 years of marriage in January and were a team of hard workers which was very rewarding. She is survived by her loving husband, Walter of Steele; her daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria and Alton Kemmet and Shirley and Dale Berg, all of Tappen; five grandchildren, Terry and Marlene Kemmet and Craig and Leslie Kemmet, all of Tappen, Dawn and Roger Thompson of Bismarck, Deanna and Matt Lachenmeier of Tappen, and Michael Berg of Bismarck; nine great-grandchildren, Kimberly and Robert Russell, Lindell Kemmet, Kandace, Alan, Kristine, Mary, and Kay Kemmet, and Bradyn and Dylan Lachenmeier; one great-great-grandchild, Ethan Russell; and four step-great-grandchildren, Alex, Laurel, Hudson, and Hayden McHenry. Also surviving her are two sisters, Anna Martin of Steele and Mathilda Zimmerman of Fargo; her sisters-in-law, Emma Werre, Alvina and Martha Martin, Lydia and Emma Morlock, Norma Pool, Tabea Mueller, Esther Guthmiller, and Erna Martin; her brothers-in-law, Tilmon Martin, Albert Guthmiller, and Jim Pool; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Mary Strobel, Hertha Oster, Adelia Doerr-Adams, and Emma Johns; and four brothers, Christ, Arthur J., George, and Edward who died in infancy.
