George E Sparrow

George E. Sparrow, 87, Bismarck, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 23, 2011. Services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, February 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 7:00 pm Sunday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, and will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. George was born July 6, 1923, in rural Pickardville, ND, to Edward and Amelia Sparrow. He graduated from Lancaster, MN, High School and Concordia College, Moorhead, MN. George married Janet "Jan" Anderson at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck, on May 27, 1967. George served in the United States Army from 1944-1946, serving in the Pacific area. He was proud to have been able to serve his country in that way. He was fortunate to have been a part of the first Rough Rider Honor Flight from Bismarck to Washington DC for World War II veterans, in May 1967. It was an unforgettable experience. George worked as a social worker for the ND Department of Human Services and Burleigh County Social Services until his retirement. George also farmed in McClusky, ND, for many years. George was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck, where he sang in the church choir since 1964. He also sang in the annual presentation of the Messiah for over 40 years, as well as the Elks Chorus and Northern Lights Barbershop Chorus for a number of years. George enjoyed sharing his musical talent whenever possible whether by singing or playing his harmonica. George enjoyed crossword puzzles and watching sports, especially football. George is survived by his wife, Jan, Bismarck; sons, Greg Ingrid, South Bound Brook, NJ, Jeff Heather, Bismarck; his daughter, Kristin Robert Shaw, Bismarck; five grandchildren, Jordan, Caitlyn, Ashley, Rose, and Grace; his brother, Jon Sparrow, Bismarck; sister-in-law, Jo Sparrow, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Marie Hausauer; and his brothers, Kenneth and Edgar Sparrow. The family would like to thank St. Alexius's Hospice for their wonderful care and support of George. Memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck.
