George Vonasek

George Vonasek, 73, Bismarck, died April 3, 2012, in his home surrounded by his family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am Tuesday, April 10, at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck, with Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be held at 12:00 noon Wednesday, April 11, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm Monday, April 9, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. George was born on August 12, 1938, in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Frank and Nettie Bohac Vonasek. He grew up in Tabor, MN, and attended school at Sunny Side District 46 grade school. George graduated from Sacred Heart High School in East Grand Forks, MN, on May 27, 1956. George married Mary Jane McGurran on February 4, 1961, in Grand Forks, ND. He was enlisted in the US Air Force as an aircraft radio mechanic and was stationed in Hawaii from June 1958 until being honorably discharged in September 1962. Following his military service, he moved to Bismarck, ND, and was employed by Northwestern Bell now Quest until his retirement in July 2001. He worked as a central office technician and also part-time for Lacher Alarm Co. installing alarm systems. George was a proud member of the AFL-CIO and a loyal Democrat. He served as union president for seven years for Communication Workers of America Local 7301, was a charter member of the Amvets, Eagles Club, and lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers. He enjoyed camping, fishing and hunting with his family and friends. He was known to make beer and wine and looked forward to his weekly outings with his friends at the Blarney Stone. George took great pride in his family. George is survived by his wife, Mary Vonasek, Bismarck; daughter, Sandra Schlatter and her husband, Kurt and their sons, Jesse and Jared Schlatter, Bismarck; son, Michael Vonasek and his wife, Leanne, El Paso, TX; daughter, Laura Wald and her husband, Loren, and their children, Lance and Leah Wald; two brothers, Donald Bonnie Vonasek and Tony Vonasek; his sister, Mary Ann Gerald Mozinski; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Thomas; his parents and his grandparents.
