George Werner

George Werner 70, Bismarck, died August 22, 2005 in the Bear River Valley Hospital Tremonton, Utah. Services will be held AT 10:30 a.m. Monday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Paul Becker officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan with military rites by VFW Post 1326. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 PM Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service where a rosary/vigil will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. George was born February 18, 1935, at Linton, North Dakota, the son of John and Anne Richter Werner. The family moved to Bismarck in 1937 where George attended and graduated from St. Mary's grade and high school. He attended what was then BJC top floor of Bismarck High School. In January 1954, George enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served four years, stationed one year in Korea. Following his discharge he continued his education at BJC, which was now located at North 9th Street. He married Vernie Kottenbrock of Glen Ullin on May 2, 1959, at Haymarsh, north of Glen Ullin. They had five children, Danette, Joleen, Charley, Jonathon, and Jon. He grew up working in his father's business "Werner's Standard" and later "Werner's Conoco" until 1992, after approximately 35 years. He sold cars from 1992-2001 and at the time of his death had been employed at Menard's since 2001. George enjoyed his family and working and especially enjoyed the companionship of his best friend, his wife, Vernie. He enjoyed playing all sports, fast pitch softball being his favorite. His kindness touched all who knew him. George is survived by his wife, Vernie of Bismarck; two daughters, Danette Steen Ron of Bismarck and Joleen Bob Fairbairn of Fort Collins, CO; two sons, Charley Werner Lori of West Jordan, Utah and Jon Werner of Bismarck; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Jayson and Jacob Steen, Anthony Werner, Kristi Werner, and Alex and Rachel Fairbairn; four great-grandchildren, Abbey, Isaac, Kaden and Caleb Steen; two sisters, Shirley Schneider of Bismarck and Judy Al Felgate of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his son, Jonathon in 1966; his brother, Jim in 1955; his father, John in 1983; his mother, Anne in 2004;and his brother-in-law, Al Schneider.
