Gloria Sand

Gloria Sand, Bismarck, died August 7, 2009. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday at Eastgate Funeral Service Chapel, Bismarck, with Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be held in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm Sunday and from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Gloria was born July 2 at Aberdeen, SD, to John Gray and Della Pueppke Gray. As she was born close to Independence Day, she was named for the glory of the 4th of July. The family moved to Bismarck shortly after her birth. She was a proud graduate of Bismarck High School and a serious Demons fan particularly basketball throughout her life. While in high school, her classmates referred to her as the class historian due to her great memory. After graduating from high school she worked briefly at the State Capitol. It was there she met her future husband, Attorney Paul M. Sand and they were married for 32 years. After her marriage she was a homemaker. They had one daughter, Sheila. She supported any professional basketball team that Phil Jackson coached. She was very excited when the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship this year. She was looking forward to Phil and the Lakers defending their title next year. Gloria maintained an immaculate yard. Her yard was filled with ferns and flowers, daisies were her favorite. She lived close to the state capitol building. She always made a point to have her yard be in showcase condition for the 4th of July as she knew many people would be in the area for the annual Independence Day celebration on the state capitol grounds. She was also very proud of the state government service of the two most important men in her life. Her father was ND State Tax Commissioner and her husband was an Associate Justice on the ND State Supreme Court. Gloria is survived by her daughter, Sheila Earl McClenathan, Bismarck; and sisters-in-law, Agnes Axtman and Monica Archie Grove, both of Rugby. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
