Gottlieb Maier

Gottlieb Maier, 98, died November 13, 2004 at a Bismarck care center. Services will be held Thursday at 2:00 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center chapel with Rev. Joel Sherer and Rev. Dale Nabben officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 - 9:00 PM and Wednesday from 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Gottlieb was born March 28, 1906 on the family farm east of Ashley, ND, the son of Johanas and Sarah Remfer Maier. He was raised on the farm and attended rural school. On June 2, 1929 he married Bertha Strobel and they had two children. They farmed near his home place until 1936 when they moved to Ellendale, ND, where he worked for the WPA and later worked for Dobler's Meat Market. In 1948, he moved the family to Ashley, ND, where he owned and operated Maier's Meat Market. In 1949, Gottlieb sold the meat market and moved to Bismarck where he worked for Quality Meat Market until it closed. He and Bertha spent their final working years in the Bismarck school system as custodians at Pioneer and Grimsrud schools. The children at the schools were a great joy to them. Gottlieb was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and in his younger years, spent many years as a church councilman. He used to talk about how he helped build the church that is on the corner of 14th & C. He was a great "Mr. Fix-it Man" who could repair almost anything and he took much pride in his work. He was a life member of the Eagles Club. Gottlieb spent the last five years at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center under the loving and tender care of the dedicated staff. He is survived by one daughter, Luella "Lu" Miller, Bismarck; one son and daughter-in-law, Al and Phyllis Maier, Aitkin, MN; two brothers, Christ, Ashley, ND, and Otto, Bismarck, ND; one sister-in-law, Annie Maier, Wahpeton, ND; two brothers-in-law, Edwin Edna Strobel and Enoch Viola Strobel, all of Ashley; six grandchildren, Barb Floyd Fischer, Pat Patch, Darcey Clyde Thompson, Wendy Joel Larkin, Jenn Dan Johnson, and Brandon Alison Maier; one step-grandson, Ken Miller; and five great-grandchildren, Ryan Cindy Thompson, Jason Thompson, Casey Thompson, Jordan Larkin, and Peyton Maier. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; four brothers; and three sisters.
