Harold Lautt

Harold Lautt, 85, Steele, died August 11, 2010, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, MN, with his wife by his side. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Steele, ND, with Rev. Lisa Ahlness and Rev. Shirley Teske officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Eastgate Steele Chapel, Steele, ND, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Monday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Harold was born on March 7, 1925, in Fredonia, ND, the son of Fred and Margaret Kranzler Lautt. He was raised and attended school in Fredonia. Harold was inducted into the U.S. Army in February 1945 and returned in November 1946 from the south Pacific Theatre as a Private First Class. He then farmed for a number of years. Harold and Doris Fiechtner were united in marriage on August 29, 1948, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Kulm, ND. They moved to Emrick, ND, in Wells County, where Harold hauled bulk gas for eight years before moving to Cathay, ND, to haul gas for Standard Oil Company. He then worked for Wells County Road Department for fourteen years, retiring in April 1987. Harold and his wife had opened their home as foster parents in the 1960s and in 1986 did foster care for two clients from 4th Corporation for the handicapped of New Rockford. This was a very enjoyable and satisfying time in their lives. Both clients passed away in February and September of 2004. After spending 48 years in Wells County, Harold and Doris decided it was time to move closer to Bismarck and medical facilities. They moved to Steele, ND, on August 21, 2005, and became members of Grace Lutheran Church in Driscoll, ND, in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Doris Fiechtner Lautt; his son, Lee Lautt; his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and David Drew; one granddaughter, Kaelin Marissa Lautt; two grandsons, James Julie Drew, and Brian Drew; one great-granddaughter, Kaylie Marie Drew; two sisters, Marie Wittmeyer and Rubie Haag; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ted and Walter Lautt; one sister, Katie Nitschke; and three brothers-in-law, Henry Nitschke, John Koenig, and Arthur Haag.
