Harold Michelson

Harold D. Michelson, 92, Bismarck, died December 4, 2008, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 11:00 am Friday at Parkway Funeral Service Chapel, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Marty Michelson and Rev. Willis Potratz officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 pm Friday in Martin Baptist Cemetery, Martin, ND.Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 9:00 pm Thursday at Parkway Funeral Service and will continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Harold was born December 27, 1915, in Sheridan County, ND, the son of Emil G. and Rose Harr Michelson. He grew up on the family farm near Martin, ND, and later farmed his own land for 52 years. Harold attended Martin School, Valley City State Teacher’s College and earned degrees from Minot State University and University of North Dakota. He married Doris Irene Sunde. Harold worked as a teacher and as an administrator at various school districts throughout his career, including; Martin, Bergen, Barton, Des Lacs, Willow City and Minot. He was also the ND Director of Secondary Education for 12 years. He enjoyed flying his airplane around the state to visit schools. He served a term as President of the National Association of the State Supervisors and Directors of Secondary Education. Upon profession of faith in Jesus Christ, Harold was baptized at age 13 and joined Martin Baptist Church, later Bismarck Baptist Church until his death. He served at his church and on boards of various ministries during his life, and was active in supporting missions around the world, including the North American Baptist Conference, Steer Inc., and Campus Crusade. Harold had a lifelong interest in Indian lore and was a collector of Indian artifacts as well as enjoying rock collecting, hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling, and singing. Harold was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and friend to many. Harold is survived by his daughters, Janet David Greer and Marlys Terry Burke; his sons, Donald Darlene Michelson and Ralph Beverly Michelson; 12 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Wesley Alice Michelson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris, and his parents.
