Harry Berg, Sr.

Harry R. Berg, Sr., died January 19, 2004 in a Bottineau care center. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Bethany Lutheran Church, Robinson, with the Rev. Allen Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Bethany Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Harry Ray Berg, Sr., was born January 21, 1914, on the family farm near Robinson, ND, to Martin G. and Roseanna Gilbertson Berg. He was raised there and attended the area grade school. He later attended Benson County Agricultural School in Maddock, ND. Harry farmed with his father until serving in the U.S. Army during WWII when he was stationed in Europe and Panama. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Following the war, Harry worked as a welder in the Portland, Oregon and Seattle Washington shipyards. He returned to North Dakota and married Eldora Vold on June 27, 1949, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Robinson. He worked in a lumber mill in Washburn, ND and later purchased the family farm near Robinson. He worked as a welder at Melroe in Bismarck until retiring. Eldora died in Robinson on April 18, 1995. Harry was very patriotic and felt that religion should be an important part of a person's life. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Robinson, a member of the VFW in Tuttle, and the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans, both in Bismarck. Harry enjoyed welding and metal work, fishing, hunting, and gardening. Harry is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Larry Gienger of Bottineau, ND, Jean and Kent Fredrickson of Minot, ND, and Susan and Randy Anderson of Vancouver, WA; his son Harry Ray Berg, Jr. of Baghdad, Iraq; his three grandchildren, Kristen Fredrickson of Rochester, MN, Kent Fredrickson of Wahpeton, ND, and Lauren Gienger of Bottineau; his one brother and sisters-in-law, Lydia Berg of Bismarck and Gerhard and June Berg of Seattle, WA; his three sisters and one brother-in-law, Mabel Solheim of Bismarck, Evelyn and Oscar Sorhus of Seattle, WA and Edna Heimer of Arlington, WA; his nephew who was like a brother, Marion Knudtson of Washburn, ND; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Eldora, his son Dennis Berg , one brother, Henry Berg, and four sisters, Genora Kittleson, Luella Christensen, Myrtle Bogel, and Miranda Knudtson.
