Hazel E Boren

Hazel Simonson Boren, 103, Bismarck, kissed the world goodbye, grabbed her wings and flew to her family on November 10, 2011. Hazel was born July 24, 1908, in Superior, WI, to John and Julia Lystad Simonson. She was the third of four children. Hazel was the first generation to be born in the US; her parents came across the Atlantic from Norway in 1900. Hazel moved to Parshall, ND, in 1915, where she grew up on the family farm. She graduated from Garrison High School in 1924. She enrolled at the State Teachers College at the age of 16. She graduated in 1926. Hazel then continued her education at UND in Grand Forks, ND. Hazel taught high school English in Garrison and McKenzie, ND, until she married. Hazel and Gerald "Jerry" Boren were married at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Mound City, SD, on March 2, 1935. They had one son, Monte. They resided in Hazelton, ND, until 1945, when they moved to Bismarck, ND. Hazel and Jerry owned Jerry's Supper Club and Missouri Slope Livestock Auction. She was very involved in both businesses. She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a very involved member. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter #11, and lifelong member of Sigma Alpha Kappa Sorority. She and Jerry were members of the Bismarck/Mandan Square Dance Club for many years. She was a world traveler. She took a trip of a lifetime to Norway where she went to her parents' homes. Hazel lived in Bismarck until she moved to Prairie View Nursing Home in 2004. There she was blessed with numerous people she considered her family. Thank you for providing Hazel with world class care, love, and respect over the years. She was truly blessed to be able to call you her family. Hazel always felt strongly about teaching, so she donated her body to the UND School of Medicine. Per her request, there will be no services. She is survived by a very special nephew, James and his wife, Gail Braun, Willmar, MN; her grandchildren, Eric Maria, Devils Lake, ND, Jon Sheryl, VA, Chris, Williston, ND, Jerry, VA, Julie Trent Hardy, Bismarck; six great-grandchildren, two grand nephews and one grand niece. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry; her son, Monte; her parents; her sisters, brother, in-laws, and a grand nephew, Billy Braun.
