Isedor "Issy" Zimmerman

Isedor Zimmerman, 88, died December 28, 2012, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in Bismarck. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Dawson Community Building with Jacob DeBoer officiating. Burial will be at Dawson City Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM at Eastgate Steele Chapel. Visitation will continue Wednesday for one hour prior to the service. Isedor "Issy" was born on May 14, 1924, in Napoleon, ND, the son of Carl and Marie Sukut Zimmerman. He was raised and attended school in Napoleon. He joined the US Navy in January of 1945 and received his basic training at Great Lakes Naval Station. Issy spent part of his time at Twenty Nine Palms and Treasure Island, CA. He married Evelyn Schmidt of Dawson, ND, on June 15, 1946, at Berkeley, CA. He was honorably discharged on July 19, 1946. They worked in a fruit packing plant after his discharge. They moved back to North Dakota in the fall of that year, and farmed for 36 years near Dawson, ND. Issy also did commercial sheep shearing for 20 years. They then moved to Steele, ND and lived there for 21 years before moving to Bismarck in 2004. Issy was a member of Dawson Lutheran Church where he served on the council for many years and always was a willing worker for the church. He was a member of American Legion John Green Post for 50 plus years and served as commander for a number of years. He served on the Steele-Dawson School Board for 16 years, and was Vernon Township clerk for many years. He enjoyed woodworking and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. Issy was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by his family and many good friends. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Bismarck; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Steve Voeller of Rugby, ND, and their children, Laurie Chuck Volk, Kerri Todd Allmaras, Michael Heidi Voeller, and Jamie Jeremy Wald; daughter and son-in-law, Janice Jerome Manske of Hankinson, ND, and their children, Tara Clint Dowty and Shelly Manske; son and daughter-in-law, Gene Pat Zimmerman of Dawson and their children, Heather Shaun Aarhus and Bradley Lisa Zimmerman; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Backhus of Bismarck and Betty Deane of Minnesota; one sister-in-law, Viona Zimmerman of Jamestown, ND; and many nieces and nephews. Issy was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Rau and Alma McCollough; and five brothers, Gideon, Ruben, Walter, Alvin, and Edward Zimmerman. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to donor's choice.
