Janna K Stein

Janna Kaye Hirsch Stein, 54, Bismarck ND, passed away on January 29, 2014, at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, February 4, at First Lutheran Church, 408 9th Street NW, Mandan, with Rev. Lee Herberg officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm Monday, February 3, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Cremation has taken place. Janna was born on March 7, 1959 in Mandan ND to Fridolph C. Fred and Helen Hirsch. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1977 and went on to further her education graduating from Moorhead State University in MN in 1982 with a degree in Social Work. Janna married Tracy Stein in June 1983 in Mandan. They lived in Williston for one year before returning to Mandan and have lived in Burleigh County since 2002. Janna began her social work career at the Bismarck/Mandan Police Youth Bureau; she then went to the ND Department of Corrections Division of Juvenile Services. For the past 17 years she has been employed with the Bismarck District PATH Office. Janna was very dedicated to her profession and truly enjoyed working with children and families. Janna's hobbies included designing indoor and outdoor flower arrangements. She learned the trade while working in her brother's floral business, Hirsch Florist in Mandan. Janna enjoyed attending craft fairs, shopping especially on her vacations to Arizona, and taking in Sawyer Brown concerts. She saw them over 20 times and traveled where ever they were in ND to take in a show! Janna loved to travel. She went to Australia, Alaska, Brazil and Hawaii. One accomplishment she was particularly proud of was her one and only scuba dive off the coast of Cairns, Australia on the barrier reef. Because of Janna's personal experience with rheumatoid arthritis she took pride in chairing events for the Arthritis Foundation. Grateful for having shared in her life are her husband Tracy; mother, Helen Hirsch, Bismarck; sister, Merry Wetsch, Mandan; brother, Steven Hirsch, Helena MT; brother, David Fatima Hirsch, Bismarck. Janna is also survived by her mother-in-law, Anne Stein, Forman ND; brothers-in-law, Terry Stein, Willmar MN, Bruce Cyndi Stein, Hankinson, ND, and Todd Diane Stein, Cogswell, ND. Janna had numerous nieces and nephews; and was particularly close to her niece Jen Wetsch-Jessen, and many good friends, especially Ginger Illich and Pat Andahl who unselfishly gave of their time during Janna's illness. Janna was preceded in death by her father, Fred Hirsch. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to PATH or the Arthritis Foundation.
